The Spartans answered Cy Ridge and finished ahead for the half. The Spartans won the game 61-52. Kemari Stanfill and Matthew McDuffie lead the scoring effort shooting 11 for 16 from the 3-point line. Stanfill had 21 points and McDuffie had 18 points on the day.

SHS vs Cy Fair – 01/20/21: SHS 58 – Cy Fair 59 The Spartans lost a heartbreaker against Cy Fair on Wednesday 58-59. The Spartans came out cold in the first half and never could get much rhythm going on offense. Despite a sluggish start, the Spartans managed to keep the game close and give themselves a shot in the fourth quarter. In the final 1 minute 45 seconds of the game the Spartans surged ahead to take a one-point lead. Cole Overbergen made 2 free throws and a key three-point bucket combined with 2 free throws from Matthew McDuffie to bring the Spartans within two. With less than 10 seconds left McDuffie drove to the basket for 2 points and the ”and one” free throw to put the Spartans ahead by one. But despite a thrilling final push, Cy Fair managed to drive the court in the final 7 seconds and score the final bucket to secure the win. The Spartans put up a great fight but came away short in the end. This rivalry game always proves to be exciting and this one was no different. The Spartan fans cheered their team on despite a closely called game that sent both teams to the line quite a bit. Varsity Boys Basketball Week of January 11

By Chip Dudley 01/25/2021, 1:45pm CST

SHS vs Spring Woods Tigers @ SHS Gym 1/11/21:

The Spartans began their District week 2 with a 6-7 overall record and a 2-1 in-District record.   The Spartans started out quickly by dominating a sluggish Spring Woods offense.  Unfortunately, turnovers continued to hamper the Spartans, but despite that, the 1st quarter ended with a 22-8 lead.  At the beginning of Q2, the Tigers started a full court press.  Their offensive aggressiveness matched their defensive aggressiveness and the Spartans got a bit sloppy.  Despite the sloppiness, the Spartan halftime lead grew by 2 points to 37-21.   The second half started with a 5-0 run by the Tigers and with continued sloppy play by SHS, there were thoughts of concern.   The score was 46-31 in favor of SHS with 3:05 to go in the 3rd, but after that, the Spartans went on a 7-2 run and took command with a 53-33 lead.   The 3rd ended at 55-36.   The game went on cruise control after that with the Spartans out-scoring the Tigers 17-8 in the fourth.    A dominating win by Stratford 72-44.  Outstanding play:    Hector Igbikowubo had a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds.   Hawkins Polley led all Spartan scorers with 15 points.    Caden Francis contributed a season high 12 points and Garrett Dudley poured in 9 points.  Keanu Dawes and Luke Hatcher scored 11 points each.  Keanu hauled in 8 rebounds.

SHS vs Northbrook Raiders @ NBHS Gym 1/13/21:

Following the SWHS win, the Spartans improved to 7-7 overall and 3-1 in District play.       Their next opponent was the Northbrook Raiders who held a 2-11 overall record.  The game started with a deliberately slow Raider offense, which seemed to work, lulling SHS to sleep.  The pace increased in the 2nd half of the 1st quarter though, which gave the Spartans enough boost to post a 19-7 lead after 1.  The 2nd quarter had the Spartans dominating the game while the Raiders continued a timid, indecisive offense.   The Spartans out-scored the Raiders 21-5 in Q2 to go in to halftime with a 40-13 lead.  The third quarter had the Raiders adjust their gameplan and get a bit more aggressive.   3rd quarter scoring was fairly even at 20-17 in favor of SHS.   The Spartan lead grew to 60-30 at the end of 3.   The fourth quarter had all Spartan starters resting.   The Spartans held Northbrook to only 9 points in the 4th and cruised on to a 72-39 victory.  Outstanding play:  Caden Francis out-did his season high from last game by scoring a team-high 13.   Keanu Dawes, Luke Hatcher, and Garrett Dudley each scored 10 points.  Hector Igbikowubo scored 9 and ripped down 8 rebounds.   James McVaugh contributed 5 points.

SHS vs Cypress Ridge Rams @ SHS Gym 1/16/21:

Following the NBHS win on 1/13, the Spartans improved to 8-7 overall and 4-1 in District play.     Their next opponent was the Cypress Ridge Rams who held a 5-9 overall record coming in to the game.  The game started with the Rams in a full court press the whole time.  The first quarter was intense, with both teams playing well and ball movement outstanding.  The Rams were working the baseline to perfection for easy shots in the paint.  Q1 ended at a dead heat with a 16-17 Ram lead.  The 2nd quarter started with two perfectly executed Snowbird plays with Keanu Dawes to Luke Hatcher to out-smart the Ram defensive press.  The Spartans went on a 6-2 run to take a 22-19 lead with 5:08 to play in the half.  Solid defense and good help for the SHS guards in breaking the press led to a 30-21 halftime lead.  The 2nd half had the Spartans pulling away with outstanding defense and Cy Creek turnovers.  The Ram’s baseline play was finally shut down.  The Rams were only held to 7 points the entire 3rd quarter while the Spartans scored 21.  In the 4th quarter, the Rams’ will was visibly broken with their offense slowing down considerably.  They only scored an additional 6 points the entire quarter due to outstanding Spartan D.   The game concluded with a rout – 70-34 Spartan victory.  Outstanding play:  Luke Hatcher led all Spartan scorers with 20 points.  Jameson Cronin and Keanu Dawes scored 14 and 11 points respectively.   Hawkins Polley and Garrett Dudley contributed 6 and 5 points respectively.  Hector Igbikowubo led all Spartan rebounders with 8 and contributed 7 points.
