Stratford @ Cy Ridge – Wednesday, April 16
District play continued for the JV Spartans this past week, as they traveled to face the Cy Ridge Rams.
Game 1
The Spartans jumped on the board early in the first inning, scoring 5 runs thanks to a slow start by the Rams' pitching staff and some heads-up base running. Scoring for the Spartans did not slow down in subsequent innings. In total, they tallied 17 runs in 4 innings, thanks to Luke Szilagyi (4-4, 4 RBIs, 3 R, 3 SBs), Carter Saunders (1-2, 3 RBIs, 2 SBs), and Jack Sullivan (1-2, BB, 2 RBIs, 2 R, 3 SBs). Carsten Vasut, Hunter Gilbert, and Caden Stone each had 1 hit and 1 RBI during the game.
Levi Lease started things off on the mound for the Spartans in game one. He threw 2 innings, allowing 6 runs (3 earned) on 1 hit, striking out 2 and walking 6. Liam Schultz and Peter Hebert each threw a shutout inning for the Spartans, with Schultz requiring only 11 pitches to strike out the side, and Hebert requiring only 16 pitches to retire his 3 batters, striking out 2. Thanks to good pitching (only 1 hit allowed), patience at the plate (13 walks), hot bats (9 hits), and fast feet (19 stolen bases), the Spartans beat Cy Ridge 17-6.
Game 2
Much to the Rams' dismay, the second game brought more of the same, and Stratford proved to be too much for the Rams to handle, shutting them out 14-0. The Spartans' 14 runs came on 9 hits, with Carsten Vasut, William Coates, Riley Braniff, Caden Stone, Anthony Castillo, Manny Estrada, Hunter Gilbert, Grayson Granda, and Liam Schultz each collecting one hit. The team continued to show off its speed, swiping 9 bases (Gilbert 3 SBs, Schultz 2 SBs, and Vasut 2 SBs). The Spartans' pitching staff of Coates (3 Ks, 2 BB), Iziah Delatorre (1 K), Vasut (1K, 2 BBs), and Jackie Hope (4 Ks) each threw one scoreless inning, allowing no hits.
The team will face Memorial this Thursday in the Backyard at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm in its final doubleheader of the season. Come out and show your support!
