What a way to end the season, with a dramatic last inning WIN against Memorial, finishing up the week with 2 wins as they had picked up another win against Cy Ridge earlier in the week. The Spartans went a perfect 7-0 in the second round of District play, ending with a record of 12-2 and earning the title of Co-District Champions with Cy Fair. A HUGE FEAT! The Spartans will enter the first round of playoffs this week, game times TBD.
The Spartans finished on the District leaderboards for batting average (Hibbetts 4th), homeruns (Yslas 5th), RBIs (Yslas and Hibbetts tied for 5th), runs scored (Marks 1st), ERA (Katterhenry 2nd), strikeouts (Katterhenry 2nd) and wins (Katterhenry tied for 1st).
vs. Cy Ridge – Win (12-1)
After a scoreless first-half inning by the Spartans, Cy Ridge struck first in the bottom of the 1st on 2 outs, as their three-hole hitter hit a bomb. Neither team would be able to score until finally the Stratford bats came alive and they scored 10 runs in the top of the 6th inning. The offensive battle was started with a double by Layla Yslas, followed by a single by Allison Hibbetts. Aashna Kapoor was then hit by a pitch, and Marielle Kiersh tripled to center field. Elizabeth McGuire and Alessia Avalos both walked, Brooklyn Marks hit a single to center field, Gwyn Katterhenry drew a walk, Yslas then hit a sacrifice fly, Hibbetts singled again, and Kapoor doubled, bringing the total runs scored in the top of the 6th inning to 10 after the lineup batted around. After a quick 1-2-3 inning, the Spartans were back to bat and able to pick up 2 more runs in the top of the 7th from 4 singles by Avalos, Sophie Donnel, Katterhenry, and Yslas. The game was ended after three strikeouts in the bottom of the 7th! Katterhenry pitched a complete game and earned the win, giving up 3 hits and 1 earned run over 7 innings, while striking out 14, bringing her Stratford strikeout record to over 350Ks.

vs. Memorial – Win (6-5)
Stratford came to play last Thursday night…after a leadoff walk by Brooklyn Marks and a sacrifice bunt by Gwyn Katterhenry, Allison Hibbetts picked up an RBI with a single to left field, scoring Marks. A defensive battle began as both teams were scoreless until the top of the 5th, when Stratford was able to pick up another 3 runs as Katterhenry was hit by a pitch, and Layla Yslas hit a 2-run homer. Hibbetts then hit a single to right field and scored on a hit by Aashna Kapoor.
Stratford was leading 4-0 going into the bottom of the 5th inning. With two outs and runners on 1st and 2nd, Memorial hit a 3-run homer…and then hit another homer to even the score at 4-4 going into the top of the 6th inning (boo!) Stratford was unable to score, and then on two outs, Memorial put the ball in play and was able to score 1 more run for the go-ahead lead of 4-5 into the top of the 7th inning. Down by 1 run, Stratford was still in this game. Hibbetts led off the inning with a single to shortstop, and Kapoor then moved her to 2nd base with a sacrifice bunt. On two outs, Elizabeth McGuire was hit by a pitch. Alessia Avalos then hit a CLUTCH double to left field, scoring 2 runs and giving Stratford the lead 6-5 going into the bottom of the 7th inning. With two runners on and no outs, Stratford defense SHOWED OUT…they stopped the Mustangs from scoring after amazing catches by Marks in centerfield, Hibbetts in right field, and McGuire at 2nd base! Katterhenry pitched a complete game to earn the win (her first against Memorial!) giving up 6 hits, none until the 5th inning, while striking out 5. THANK YOU, Stratford fans for showing up last Thursday. It was great to see as many if not MORE Spartan fans in the stands than Mustangs!
