VARSITY AREA MEET
Stratford hosted the Area Championship on Friday, April 11th. Area combines qualifiers from District 17 and 18, and the top 4 in each event advance to the Region 3-6A Championship. Stratford is sending 17 athletes to Regionals, where they will compete for a trip to the State Meet in Austin on May 3rd.
Our field events had an impressive day at the Area meet. Senior Jack Boyce found himself on the podium once again, placing 2nd in discus. Kenny White advanced to Regionals in shot put. Throwers, Jack and Kenny, have scored consistently for the Stratford team all season. Trinity Rosas and Maddie Nguyen earned 2nd place finishes in pole vault and triple jump, respectively.
The running events started with double medals for Ben Pearce in the 3200m and 1600m races. Andrew Hopkins dominated the 800m race to take the gold. A gutsy fourth-place finish from Davis Kendall in a blazing-fast 100m race will send him to Regionals. Liza Heitmann and Cat Botacio went 2-3 in the 400m race. Liza improved her PR, running 57.4! After a long day of competition, the girls (Heitmann, Botacio, Houston, Florence) and boys (Hirst, Muher, Koy, Hopkins) 4x400m teams both advanced to Regionals in the last event of the evening. A shout-out goes to freshman Shelby Waggenspack for narrowly missing out on a qualifying spot in the 1600m with a PR of 5:22!
