District Play Week 5
Stratford Spartans vs. Cy Falls Golden Eagles, Tuesday April 8th
The Spartans welcomed the Golden Eagles from Cy Falls High School to The Backyard on a great night for baseball. For the first 3 ½ innings of play, both teams exchanged body blows and equally defended each other to a 0-0 slugfest going into the bottom of the 4th. Stratford would draw first blood in the home half of the 4th. Senior Blake Barry led the inning off with a walk. With one out in a tie ball game, Junior Luke Zilafro stepped to the plate and launched a deep drive to left for a double, putting runners on second and third with one out. Senior Rylan Reichenau delivered a sacrifice RBI fly out to center to deliver the first run of the game, making it 1-0, Green. The boys would add another in the 4th inning on a Golden Eagles error, plating Zilafro to make it 2-0. That would prove to be enough to fend off the pesky Cy Falls bunch. Junior Drew Emery went 4 innings, striking out 6 to keep the Eagles off the scoreboard. Senior Burke Malloy came on for the save and silenced the Eagle bats over the final 3 innings, allowing zero runs while striking out 4. The Spartans move their District 17-6A record to 7-2 with a Tuesday night victory.

Stratford Spartans vs. Cy Falls Golden Eagles, Friday April 11th
Game 2 saw the Varsity Spartans travel to the land of the Eagles to finish up this District matchup on a windy Friday night. Cy Falls struck first in their home half of the first inning to jump out on top, 1-0. The score would remain unchanged for 4 innings until the bats for Stratford finally woke up. Senior Chris Johnson laced a triple to the wall over the centerfielder’s head to put himself on 3rd with less than 2 outs. RBI machine, Junior Luke Zilafro, did what he does and delivered a line-drive single to center to score Johnson and tie the game at 1.
Sophomore Quinn Fitzpatrick settled in after allowing the only unearned run in the first inning. Quinn was overpowering and proved to be too much for the Golden Eagles all night. He would allow 6 singles over 7 innings, while striking out 8. There would be no more damage than the 1 run scratched across in the first for Cy Falls. Quinn gave the offense a chance all night at keeping the Eagles' bats at bay. The bats would answer in the top of the 7th. Junior Matthew De Jager began the inning with a single to right field. Not to be out done, Junior Brandon Phillips followed with a single to put the Spartans on 1st and 2nd with 0 outs. Junior Will McCarroll advanced runners over 1 base and into scoring position with a ground out, setting the table for Senior Rylan Reichenau. On the first pitch he saw, Reichenau delivered a hard-hit ball back up the middle, through a drawn-in infield to plate both Junior Jack McAfee (on to run for De Jager) and Phillips to give the boys in green a 3-1 lead and some breathing room for Fitzpatrick. The bottom of the 7th saw a couple of Eagles reach base and load the bases. Calm under pressure with 1 out and the bases loaded, the big right-hander reached down for some extra mojo and struck out the final two Eagles to secure the victory and series sweep.
After 5 weeks of District 17-6A play, the Spartans sit at 8-2, in a tie for second place with 4 games still to play.
