Stratford JV vs. Cy Falls – Wednesday, April 9
The Spartan JV Team hosted a doubleheader against the District newcomer Cy Falls Eagles this week at the Backyard. The first game would be a low-scoring affair, but the Eagles would take advantage of walks in the first inning to plate the first run of the game and take an early lead. Stratford’s sophomore starting-pitcher Jack Hope settled down in the second inning and did not allow a hit in his 2.2 innings pitched. Both pitching staffs found their rhythm over the next four innings without much traffic on the bases, until the bottom of the fifth when the Spartans got a spark from freshman Peter Hebert, who led off with a sharp ground ball through the left side. Sophomore Hunter Gilbert laced a line-drive triple to left field to score the tying run, and junior Carter Saunders delivered the clutch go-ahead RBI single to right field to complete the rally. Sophomore John Nugent (3.1 IP, 0 R, 4 K’s) was steady as usual in relief and would seal the 2-1 comeback win for the Spartans.
The nightcap would feature a hit parade as the Stratford bats caught fire with several Spartans tallying multiple hits. Junior speedster Carsten Vasut had 4 hits, including a double with 2 RBI’s, and would kickstart the offense in the first inning as the Spartans put up 8 runs and would not look back. Anthony Castillo (2-3, 2 2B’s, 2 RBI’s), Jack Sullivan (2-2, RBI), John Nugent (2-3, 2 R’s) and Caden Stone (1-2, 2 RBI’s) were also key contributors on offense. The defense and pitching were also rock solid as Liam Shultz (3 IP, 1 ER, 5 K’s), Levi Lease (1 IP, 2 ER, 1 K), and Izaiah Delatorre (1 IP, 0 R, 2 K’s) combined to quiet the Eagles' bats on the way to an impressive 14-3 victory.
Stratford will travel to Cy Ridge on Wednesday for another District doubleheader and will try to improve on their 7-3 District record.
