Stratford Sophomore Spartans vs. Cy Falls Sophomore Golden Eagles, Wednesday, April 9th

The Stratford Sophomores utilized 4 pitchers to pull off an awesome come-from-behind win. Andrew Williams started the game throwing 2 scoreless innings, allowing only 2 hits, no walks, and 2 strikeouts. Stratford got on the board first when Joel Torres grounded out but scored in teammate Carlos Perez in the second inning. Jackson Fleming came in relief in the third inning, as did Gus Green, who secured the final outs. However, it was a damaging inning as Cy Falls scored 5 runs. Gus Green continued to pitch all of the 4th and 5th innings, allowing no additional runs and striking out 4. While Stratford did manage a run in the 5th when a sacrifice fly by Clay Emery scored in Torres, Stratford was still losing by 3 runs going into their final at-bat in the 6th.

With their backs against the wall, Stratford battled back, scoring an impressive 8 runs in the 6th! Stratford wasted no time getting their offense going when two singles in a row by Clayton Croley and George Fletcher started the 6th inning. Then another single to right field by Perez scored in CroleyThen a clutch, bases-clearing double by Torres gave Stratford the lead 6-5. However, Stratford wasn’t satisfied with just a one-run lead as their offense kept firing. Not to be outdone by his teammate, Noah Kerr shot a rocket to left field for a double of his own, scoring in Torres. Finally, a single by Jackson Seel to left field and a walk by Emery loaded the bases again, and the Cy Falls defense began to fall apart as errors, passed balls, and hit-by-pitches scored in all three base runners for a total of 8 runs scored in the 6th and a 10-5 Stratford lead.

Torres batted in 4 RBI’s on the day, and Croley led the team with 2 hits in 4 at-bats. Hudson Good was the final relief pitcher in the bottom of the 6th to close out the game with three quick outs and no runs. The final score remained, Stratford 10 and Cy Falls 5, proving that these Sophomore Spartans never give up no matter how insurmountable the odds.

The second of the two games at Cy Falls was a lot less dramatic but still came with a rousing victory for the Spartans. Cy Falls got on the board first in the bottom of the 1st when a ground out scored a base runner, but thankfully this proved to be their only run on the day. Stratford had solid pitching by starter Clayton Croley, and reliever Joel Torres halted any Cy Falls offense. Croley pitched 2 innings, allowing just one run, 3 hits, and 2 strike outs. Torres pitched the remaining 3 innings, giving up no runs, no hits, and 6 strikeouts! The rest of the defense was solid too as the Spartans committed zero errors in either game against Cy Falls. The Stratford pitchers were given run support and confidence by the Spartan offense, whose fire power ended up scoring 8 runs in the contest. Andrew Williams and Hudson Good each had 2 hits on the day, and both Williams and Fleming batted in 2 runs apiece. Carlos Perez, Luke Carl, and Connor Roe each had a hit as well. The final score was Stratford 8 and Cy Falls 1.

The Stratford Sophomores are now 8-1 in District play and host their final home games on Wednesday, April 16th against Cy Ridge. Come out for your last chance to see the Sophomore Spartans as they compete in District play.
