The Spartans are on FIRE! Tuesday, they knocked off #1-ranked Cy Fair to pick up a HUGE District win. On Friday, they picked up another win against Cy Falls, bringing their District play record to 10-2 , placing them tied for 1st place in District. This week they play their final two District games before playoffs, playing away on Tuesday at Cy Ridge and away at Memorial on Thursday.

vs. Cy Fair – Win (3-2)

In what was no-doubt the most intense game of the season…Stratford came out on top against the #1-ranked Cy Fair Bobcats on Tuesday evening. In what can only be described as a pitchers' duel, the Good Guys came out on top, as Cy Fair stranded 10 baserunners over the course of 7 innings. The Spartans had stranded 7 runners over the course of their 6 innings at bat. After a scoreless first inning for both teams, the Bobcats struck first putting 1 run up on the board in the top of the second inning, with the run scoring on 2 outs. Neither team was able to score in the 3rd or 4th innings, and Cy Fair put up another run in the top of the 5th inning, also on 2 outs.

Stratford got one run back in the bottom of the 5th inning. After a leadoff single by Alessia Avalos, Sophie Donnel put the ball in play and got on via a fielder’s choice, and Brooklyn Marks singled to left field, scoring Donnel. Stratford took the lead in the bottom of the 6th after 3 consecutive singles by Allison Hibbetts, a BIG TIME CLUTH hit by Aashna Kapoor to centerfield, and another single by Marielle Kiersh.

Everyone was on edge for the top of the 7th inning, where Stratford put Cy Fair down 1-2-3, from a line out to Hibbetts in right field, a pop out to Kapoor at 1st base, and a dramatic last STRIKEOUT by Gwyn Katterhenry to end the game. Exceptional defense was played by the entire infield and outfield…kudos to all the hard work paying off! Katterhenry pitched a complete game, giving up 4 hits and 2 earned runs over 7 innings, while striking out 4.

Offensive Highlights (6 Hits total):

Singles: Hibbetts (2), Avalos, Kapoor, Marks, Kiersh

Defensive Highlights:

Katterhenry: 7IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 4K

vs. Cy Falls – Win (10-4)

The Spartans put up a quick 4 runs in the top of the 1st inning from a walk drawn by Gwyn Katterhenry, two singles by Layla Yslas and Allison Hibbetts, a walk drawn by Aashna Kapoor, a double by Marielle Kiersh, another walk drawn by Elizabeth McGuire, and a single by Ava Esparza.

Unfortunately, the Spartans were unable to convert any offensive action into runs over the next 5 innings, and Cy Falls inched their way back by putting up one run on the board in the third inning and another 3 runs in the 5th to tie the score at 4-4. Thankfully, after a series of line drives hit right to the defense and some phenomenal catches by the Cy Falls centerfielder, the Spartans were finally able to break free and put up another 6 runs in the top of the 7th inning to take the lead. The offensive onslaught was started off by a single hit by Kapoor, a double by Kiersh, a single by McGuire, another single by Esparza, a single by Brooklyn Marks, a single by Katterhenry, and in dramatic fashion a 3-run line drive BOMB by Yslas over the centerfield wall. Katterhenry started the game pitching 2.1 innings. Kiersh came in relief, pitching 4.2 innings to earn the win.

Offensive Highlights (15 Hits total):

  • Singles: McGuire (3), Esparza (2), Katterhenry, Yslas (2), Kapoor (2), Hibbetts, Marks
  • Doubles: Kiersh (2)
  • HOMERUNS: Yslas

Defensive Highlights:

  • Katterhenry: 2.1IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 5K
  • Kiersh: 4.2IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 1K
