District Play Week 4

Stratford Spartans vs. Cy Fair Bobcats, Tuesday April 1st, 2025

It was a big-time matchup in week 4 for the Spartans. A road tilt vs. their arch nemesis in District 17-6A, the Bobcats from Cy Fair High School. Junior right-hander Drew Emery would get the call on this night from Coach Josh HallDrew would battle windy conditions all night and a pesky Bobcat lineup from top to bottom. Emery gave the Spartans 3 strong innings, striking out three and only allowing 3 runs. Sophomore Quinn Fitzpatrick came on in relief of Emery in the top of the 4th to try and keep the Cy Fair bats quiet and give the Spartans' offense a chance to respond. Stratford would tie the game up in the top of the 3rd at 1. Senior Owen Bennett led the inning off with a walk and was sacrifice-bunted to second by Senior Rylan Reichenau to set the table. Senior Chris Johnson delivered a rope back up the middle to score Bennett from second to tie the game. That was as close as Sparty would get all night as the Bobcats extended their lead to 3-1 and again to 4-1 in the 4th. That would prove to be all the offense they would need as the game ended 4-1 Bobcats to take game 1 in the series.

Highlights

  • Emery 3IP, 3K
  • Fitzpatrick 3IP, 3K
  • Bennett 1-3, 1R
  • Johnson 1-3, 1RBI

Stratford Spartans vs Cy Fair Bobcats, Friday April 4th, 2025

Game 2 was again on a windy night at The Backyard. It was SBMSA night and the stands were packed for Blackout night. Senior Caden Cooper took the ball from Coach Josh Hall on Friday night to try and even the series with the Bobcats. Stratford got on the board in the second inning to jump out to a quick 1-0 lead. Junior Zach Christie led the inning off with a line-drive single to center. Junior Luke Zilafro traded places with Christie on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Bobcat error to put a runner on second with 1 out. After Senior Rylan Reichenau was hit in the back with a fastball, Junior Will Tacker stepped to the plate with runners on first and second. “Tack” delivered on the first pitch he saw with a line drive to right, scoring Zilafro and making it 1-0, Green.

Cooper silenced the Cy Fair bats for 2 1/3 innings before they pushed two runs across in the top half of the 3rd to take a 2-1 lead. Sparty’s bats would respond in a big way in the home half of the third. Sophomore Ryan Lamon led the inning off with a hard-hit ball to third that was booted for a Bobcat error. Senior Chris Johnson delivered a perfect sacrifice bunt to move Lamon to second and into scoring position for the meat of the order. Senior Blake Barry decided it was time to put his foot down and give the Spartans the lead. Barry dropped a bomb over the right centerfield fence for his 3rd big fly of the season, and a 3-2 Spartans lead that sent the stands into a frenzy. Cy Fair knotted it up at 3 in the top of the 5th with a big fly of their own to centerfield. Stratford would once again answer in the home half of the 5th. Johnson and Barry would both be hit by pitches to place the Spartans on first and second base with no outs. Christie executed a picturesque sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third with one out. Zilafro gave the guys in green the lead with a deep sacrifice fly to center, scoring Johnson. That was all the damage Stratford was able to produce that inning, giving them a 4-3 lead. The Spartans' bullpen fought hard all night against a noisy Bobcat lineup. Senior Ford Givens, Sophomore Quinn Fitzpatrick, and Christie pitched 4 2/3 innings, striking out 8. In the end the Bobcats were able to push across 2 runs in the top of the 7th to give them a lead of 6-4 that the Spartans were unable to overcome.

Highlights

  • Barry 1-2, HR, 2RBI
  • Tacker 1-2, 1RBI
