Stratford Sophomore Spartans vs. Jersey Village Sophomore Falcons, Wednesday, March 26th

Despite a mid-game, one-hour lightning delay, the Stratford Sophomore Spartans were able to stay the course and execute a come-from-behind win against the Jersey Village Falcons. The Falcons got on the board first in the top of the first, when a couple of hit-by-pitches and a few walks by starter Westy Bennett scored 2 runs. While this wasn’t Bennett’s cleanest start this season, it proved to be the last time the starter stumbled for the rest of the game. He locked in and dominated for his remaining 2 and 1/3 innings, only allowing 2 hits and striking out 7. The Spartans responded in the bottom of the first by loading the bases when a double by Hudson Good, a ground ball that reached on error by Bennett, and a walk by Jack Lasseigne put Lance Picott in a position to draw a full-count walk that scored one run. And while the Spartans had action on the base paths in the 2nd and 3rd innings, they couldn’t quite string hits and walks together to score additional runs. With only one out in the top of the 4th, the lightning alarm sounded, leading to an hour lightning delay.

When the game resumed, a pitching change was made when Jackson Seel came on in relief and immediately ended the inning with two quick strikeouts. At that point, the score was Jersey Village 2 and Stratford 1. In the bottom of the 4th, it was the Spartans' turn to bat, and the hour delay clearly served as motivation, because their bats came alive. With a walk by Clayton Croley, a ground-ball single by Clay Emery (his second hit of the day), Good hit a well-struck ball to right field, scoring in his teammates to quickly make the score 2-3. Bennett followed that up with a rightfield hit of his own, scoring Good for another run, giving the Spartans a 2-run lead. Seel continued to dominate with 3 up and 3 down in the 5th and 6th innings for a total of zero hits, zero runs, zero walks, and 4 strikeouts over his 2 and 2/3 innings of work. And despite two consecutive hits by Luke Carl and Gus Green in the bottom of the 5th, no more scoring was done in the game, leading to a final score of Jersey Village 2 and Stratford Sophomore Spartans 4.

Following the lightning delay, a decision was made to cancel the second game of the doubleheader, so only one game versus Jersey Village was played.

At this point in the season, the Stratford Sophomores are 5-0 in District play. They hope to keep their winning ways going as they host Cy Fair at home this Wednesday, April 2nd. Come on out to cheer them on.
