Sophomore Baseball Looking Sharp Both Offensively and Defensively

Sophomore District Road Games

Stratford Sophomore Spartans vs. Northbrook, Wednesday, March 19th

The Stratford Sophomores got on the board quickly in the 1st inning with five runs after Westy Bennett tripled, scoring one run, Noah Kerr singled, scoring two runs, Gus Green drew a walk, scoring one run, and Clayton Croley singled, scoring one run. That proved to be just the beginning of a strong offensive performance by the Spartans. They put up five more in the second, two in the 3rd, four in the 4th, and finally three in the 5th before time expired, for a total of 19 runs on the day. Hudson Good AND Bennett went 3-4 at the plate. Jack Lasseigne, Kerr, Green, Croley (x2), and Andrew Williams all got hits as well. It was a total team effort offensively.

Andrew Williams earned the win for the Stratford Sophomores, giving up zero hits, one run, striking out 7, and walking 2 over 3 innings. Joel Torres came on in relief and really delivered. He pitched 1 and 1/3 no-run innings, giving up zero hits and zero walks and striking out 4. The final score was Stratford 19 - Northbrook 1.

 

Stratford Sophomore Spartans vs. Northbrook, Wednesday, March 19th

The offense didn’t slow down in game 2 of the series against Northbrook as 7 hits, 6 walks, and 13 errors committed by Northbrook led to 16 runs in a shut-out win for the Spartans. The Sophomore Spartans scored two runs in the top of the 1st, five in the 3rd, five in the 4th, and four more in the 5th and final inning, for a total of 16 runs. Luke Carl had a multi-hit game going 2-2 at the plate. Connor Roe, Nate Sandidge, Joel Torres, Carlos Perez, and Peter Banks all recorded a hit as well. A noteworthy moment was when Joel Torres drove in 3 runs on one hit in the 3rd inning when he tripled on a hard ground ball to right field, and then an error by the right fielder cleared the bases.

The defense was also very sharp, committing zero errors on the day. Jackson Fleming started the game with zero hits, zero runs, two strikeouts, and one walk in the first inning. Peter Banks came on in relief for three innings, giving up only one hit, no runs, only one walk and six strikeouts. Clayton Croley closed the game with three strikeouts in a row. The final score was Stratford 16 - Northbrook 0.

 

Sophomore Non-District Game

Stratford Sophomore Spartans vs. Kingwood Park Freshman Panthers, Saturday March 22nd

The Stratford Spartans and Kingwood Park Panthers proved to be evenly matched in a back-and-forth battle ending in a tie ball game. Stratford Sophomores got on the board in the top of the second after Connor Roe reached on error, Lance Picott singled to right field, and then George Fletcher reached on an error, scoring one. In the next at-bat, Jackson Fleming singled to left field, scoring one run for a Spartan lead of 2-0. Kingwood regained the lead (2-4) in the bottom of the third. Stratford bounced back, regaining the lead for themselves (6-4) in the 5th inning when Noah Kerr doubled, scoring one run, George Fletcher drew a walk, scoring one run, and a passed ball scored two runs. Fletcher led the Spartans with two runs batted in, and Kerr went 2-3 at the plate to lead the team in hits. Throughout the game, Clay Emery, Westy Bennettand Connor Roe also had a hit. The Spartans tacked on one more run in the top of the 6th when a double by Bennett, a single by Kerr, and a sacrifice fly by Nate Sandidge scored their 7th and final run. At this point the score was 7-4 Stratford, however Kingwood wouldn’t surrender and ended up scoring 3 additional runs in the bottom of the 6th, ending the game in a tie, 7-7.

Luke Carl was the starting pitcher for 3 innings with 3 hits, 4 runs, 5 walks, and 4 strikeouts. Gus Green came on in relief for 2 and 2/3 innings with 4 hits, 3 runs (1 earned), 1 walk, and 2 strikeouts. Noah Kerr pitched the final out as time expired. The final score was Stratford 7 - Kingwood Park 7.
