vs. Bridgeland Bears Tuesday, March 4th
A busy week for the Varsity Spartans would begin on Tuesday night on the road at Bridgeland High School to face the Top-15 State-Ranked Bears. Sophomore right-hander Quinn Fitzpatrick would take the ball from Coach Josh Hall to open the week’s action. In the bottom of the first, Fitzpatrick would walk the lead-off batter and, after 2 pitches to the #2 hole-hitter Junior Luke Zilafro, would cut down the runner trying to steal second base to record the first out of the inning. Quinn would issue a couple more free passes in the first but would regain control and go on to retire the side without a run scoring.
Both teams' starting pitching would prove to be too much for these high-powered lineups. Senior Chris Johnson would record a 1-out double in the second inning, and that would prove to be the only hit the Spartans would get all night. Bridgeland would push across a run in the bottom of the 4th with a walk and two stolen bases to make the score 0-1. That would prove to be enough on this night for them to get the victory. Fitzpatrick would go 3 innings, allowing 1 hit while striking out 3. Senior Ford Givens was electric in relief with 3 innings, recording 4Ks. It was a tough loss to a really good Bridgeland bunch that will prove to be a great learning experience in close District matchups later in the season.
