The Spartans are starting their season with a bang, as they walked away with TWO District wins this week against Cy Creek and Northbrook, as well as a spectacular extra-inning win against Fort Bend Christian Academy (FBCA) on Friday night. They hit the road this week with two District away games at Jersey Village and Cy Fair.
vs. Cy Creek – Win (9-3)
On Monday the Spartans continued their rained-out game from last Tuesday, resuming play in the top of the 3rd inning with bases loaded and two outs. The Spartans took a 1-0 lead in the second inning after Gwyn Katterhenry drew a walk and Aashna Kapoor singled to left field. They put 7 more runs on the board in the top of the third inning from a walk drawn by Sophie Donnel, a Brooklyn Marks hit-by-pitch, singles by Layla Yslas and Kapoor, an RBI by Allison Hibbetts, and a walk by Marielle Kiersh.
Cy Creek picked up one run in the 3rd inning, and Stratford picked up one more run in the 4th after a double by Hibbetts and singles by Kiersh and Kapoor. Cy Creek added two more runs in the bottom of the 5th but could not come back. Innings 6 and 7 were scoreless for both teams. Kapoor was 3 for 4 for the game. Katterhenry pitched a complete game, striking out 10.

vs. Northbrook – Win (17-0)
Freshman Marielle Kiersh came to play on Tuesday night, throwing her first NO-HITTER of the season! It only took the Spartans 4 innings to run-rule the Raiders. Stratford put 2 runs on the board in the first inning after Brooklyn Marks was hit by a pitch, Layla Yslas walked, and Allison Hibbetts singled. They added 6 more runs in the 2nd inning from singles by Elizabeth McGuire, Callie Piercy, and Yslas, followed by a double by Hibbetts. Three more runs were added in the 3rd inning from a triple by Ava Esparza and singles by Marks, Hibbetts, and Kapoor. The game was over in the 4th inning after the Spartans added 6 runs from a single by Sophie Donnel and a double by Piercy, followed by a walk-off GRAND SLAM by Hibbetts!

vs. Fort Bend Christian Academy (FBCA) – Win (7-6)
After a 1-2-3-out top of the 1st inning, Stratford came out strong putting 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the 1st inning from a leadoff single by Callie Piercy. Brooklyn Marks was once again hit by a pitch, Allison Hibbetts picked up an RBI scoring Piercy, and then Aashna Kapoor doubled, scoring Marks and Hibbetts. Both teams remained scoreless in the 2nd and 3rd innings, despite some spread-out singles by Sophie Donnel, Gwyn Katterhenry, and Hibbetts. Unfortunately, Fort Bend Christian Academy added 5 runs in the top of the 4th in a heartbreakingly LONG inning. Stratford bounced back to add one more run in the bottom of the 4th from a solo HOME RUN by Layla Yslas. Stratford was down 4-5 going into the bottom of the 6th inning, when Marks reached first on an error, stole 2nd base, and then scored when Yslas hit a double to left field to tie the game. Stratford had a 1-2-3-out inning in the top of the 7th but were unable to get a run in after singles by Kapoor, a sacrifice bunt by Marielle Kiersh, and another single by Katterhenry, sending the game into extra innings. The 8th inning started with a FBCA runner on 2nd base, after a strikeout, a groundout, a walk, and a fly out. Stratford went into the bottom of the 8th down by one run. In DRAMATIC fashion…Stratford started with Donnel on 2nd base. She was moved to third base from a Piercy sacrifice bunt, and FRESHMAN Brooklyn Marks walked it off with a triple to right field!!! It was a fantastic ending to a scrappy game!! Katterhenry pitched 8 innings, giving up 3 hits and striking out 10.
