Northbrook Mounts Scant Resistance in Season Opener

After the start of the JV Softball season was delayed a week due to weather (the good old-fashioned rain kind, not the once in a century/twice per year hard freeze kind), the Spartans released their pent-up aggression against Northbrook High School. The Raiders were here for a good time, not for a long time. After three innings, the game was halted when the limit was reached of what is generally considered humane.

The Spartans were gifted 15 walks and one hit-by-pitch, which accounted for the significant weight of the baserunners and runs scored. But there were a few season firsts. Kellyn Schuchardt was the season’s first baserunner by virtue of a first-inning walk, and she came around to score the season’s first run. She later also tallied the Spartans’ first triple, smashing a grounder down the third baseline. Olivia Hatler earned the season’s first hit, a Texas-leaguer to right centerfield. And Kenna Wong hit the season’s first homer, a hard grounder into the left centerfield gap that touched the fence before she touched ‘em all. There was a fourth and final hit by Leila Vazquez, who drove a liner up the middle into centerfield.

In the circle, Keely Meeks and Brynn Teixeira were nearly perfect, retiring 9 of the 10 batters they faced - 8 by strikeout - without allowing a hit or a run.

The JV Spartans have a full week of game play this week, with games on Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday. Next up is Jersey Village on Tuesday, March 4th.
