The KISD Varsity Tournament provided some stiff competition, and the Varsity Lady Spartans walked away going 3-3 as the team prepares for the District opener against Cy Creek on Tuesday.
vs. Klein Oak – Win (7-2)
The Spartans' offense started off strong in the first inning, scoring one run after a Brooklyn Marks double and a single by Layla Yslas. They were back at it after a 1-2-3 bottom of the first inning, with both Shelby Thibodeaux and Callie Piercy adding singles. Klein Oak tied it up in the second, but Stratford answered back with singles by Gwyn Katterhenry, Yslas, Allison Hibbetts, and Marielle Kiersh and a sacrifice fly by Aashna Kapoor. After another 1-2-3 inning, the offense was hot again adding another couple of runs after a single by Sophie Donnel and a double by Marks. After a scoreless 5th inning, Stratford put up two more runs from another single by Hibbetts and a sacrifice fly by Yslas. Stratford defense ended the game with a bang after a double play from an amazing catch by centerfielder Marks to double up a runner at 2nd by Yslas. Katterhenry went six innings in the circle, allowing 3 hits and 0 earned runs.

vs. North Shore – Loss (0-8)
Stratford took a rough shutout loss against North Shore on Thursday. Bats were cold and the defense was sloppy. Shelby Thibodeaux walked away with the lone Stratford hit. Kiersh started in the circle for the Spartans, pitching two innings. Katterhenry came in for three innings of relief. The Spartans were looking for redemption in Friday’s games.

vs. Mayde Creek – Win (3-2)
Redemption is sweet! The Spartans played a scrappy game against Mayde Creek on Friday morning, bouncing back from a two-run deficit after two innings. Allison Hibbetts, Callie Piercy, and Brooklyn Marks sprinkled singles throughout the first few innings but could not put together a run. Both teams were scoreless in innings 3 and 4, and Stratford had a late two-out rally to put three runs on the board in the top of the 5th inning to go ahead. Shelby Thibodeaux and Sophie Donnel singled, Gwyn Katterhenry got on base from an error scoring two runs, and Brooklyn Marks doubled scoring one run. The Spartans were able to hold Mayde Creek in the bottom of the 5th inning to secure the win. It wasn’t pretty, but they got the job done! Katterhenry threw five innings in the circle, allowing two hits and 0 earned runs while striking out five.

vs. Maypearl – Loss (2-3)
The Spartans lost a nail-biter that came down to the final minutes in a close 2-3 loss to Maypearl on Friday evening. Stratford got on the board first putting up one run after a lead-off single by Gwyn Katterhenry, followed by a single by Brooklyn Marks and an RBI by Layla Yslas. The defense shut Maypearl down after a 1-2-3 inning, then Stratford was unable to convert a Callie Piercy single in the 2nd inning and left her stranded on base. Maypearl put two runs on the board in the bottom of the 2nd. A lead-off double by Katterhenry in the 3rd gave hope, but she was left stranded on third and unable to score. Stratford was able to tie it up in the 4th inning after a lead-off walk by Marielle Kiersh, and she was moved around by Aashna Kapoor, and then Kiersh was able to score on a Piercy single. Maypearl put up a go-ahead run in the bottom of the 4th inning, and Stratford was unable to score after a double by Katterhenry, ending in an unfortunate double play from a line-drive by Marks. The Spartans were scrambling to get another inning in before time expired. After back-to-back strikeouts and two strikes on the final batter, the umpire called the game. URGH! Kapoor started the game on the mound for the Spartans. She threw two innings, striking out 2, Katterhenry appeared in relief for 2.2 innings, striking out 5.

vs. George Ranch – Win (11-9)
The Spartans came out hot in the first inning, putting up five runs from a lead-off walk by Callie Piercy, a sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Marks, hit by pitch for Layla Yslas, a walk by Allison Hibbetts, and a double by Gwyn Katterhenry to score three runs, followed by a sacrifice fly by Marielle Kiersh to score another, and a final run scored from a walk drawn by Aashna Kapoor and a double by Shelby Thibodeaux. George Ranch was able to get one run in the bottom of the 2nd, but the Spartans got that back after two singles by Marks and Yslas and an RBI ground ball by Katterhenry. The defense held George Ranch after a 1-2-3 inning, but then George Ranch scored four runs, making the score 6-5 going into the final inning. The Spartans scrapped together five more runs in the top of the 5th inning from walks by Katterhenry, Kapoor, Thibodeaux, Donnel, and Piercy, followed by a sacrifice fly by Marks and a single by Yslas. George Ranch scrambled to come back, adding three runs in the bottom of the 5th inning, but it was too little, too late. Katterhenry and Kiersh tag-teamed in a combined effort to hold on to the win in the circle.

vs. Manvel – Loss (5-15)
The wheels came off during the final game of the tournament. Six games in three days took their wear and tear on the Spartans. Highlights of the game include Shelby Thibodeaux driving in three RBIs, Marielle Kiersh going two for two, and a fantastic double play defensively by third baseman Elizabeth McGuire to Kiersh at 1st base. They put together one run in the bottom of the 1st from three consecutive singles by Brooklyn Marks, Kiersh, and Layla Yslas, and a sacrifice fly by Thibodeaux. Stratford made a last-ditch effort in the bottom of the 3rd inning after a triple by Cacey Valencia, an RBI ground-out by Gwyn Katterhenry, followed by a single by Kiersh, a walk by Yslas, a triple by Thibodeaux, and an RBI single by McGuire, but the Manvel offense was legit as Kapoor, Kiersh, and Katterhenry worked together in the circle to try to hold them at bay.
