The Spartans wrapped up their pre-season scrimmages this week against Bellaire, Seven Lakes, and Needville. The upcoming KISD Varsity Tournament will provide some excellent competition in preparation for District play starting next week.
vs. Bellaire – Win (5-1)
After a first-half inning defense of three up, three down, the Spartans put up five runs in the bottom of the first from a single by Brooklyn Marks, a home run by Layla Yslas, followed by singles by Marielle Kiersh and Aashna Kapoor, and finally a three-run home run by Shelby Thibodeaux. The Cardinals answered back with a solo home run by their clean-up batter in the second inning. Stratford continued to battle but were unable to convert any more offensive action into runs despite a single by Elizabeth McGuire and a double by Gwyn Katterhenry. Bellaire battled back, leaving runners stranded from some high-pressure defense by the Spartans. Katterhenry and Kiersh again tag-teamed the game in the circle, combining for six strikeouts.

vs. Seven Lakes – Loss (2-4)
Saturday the Spartans were off to a slow start against Seven Lakes. Despite a double by Layla Yslas and a single by Marielle Kiersh, the Spartans finally got a run on the board after two scoreless innings. Sophie Donnel was hit by a pitch, Gwyn Katterhenry grounded into a fielder’s choice, Brooklyn Marks laid down a beautiful sacrifice bunt, setting up Yslas for an RBI. They were able to add another run to their lead after a single by Ava Esparza, and a walk by Kate Sanantonio transpired into a double steal of Sanantonio to second base and Esparza to home. Unfortunately, the Spartans gave up four runs in the bottom of the 4th inning, giving the lead to Seven Lakes. Kiersh started in the circle for the Spartans, pitching two innings with 1K. Katterhenry came in relief, pitching two innings with 3Ks.

vs. Needville – Win (5-1)
Redemption is sweet! The Spartans bounced back from an ugly loss against Seven Lakes in a loud fashion as they faced off a much tougher team in Needville. Stratford got the ball rolling in the second inning scoring one run from a walk by Allison Hibbetts, followed by a double by Marielle Kiersh, and a sacrifice fly by Aashna Kapoor. The Spartans again shutdown Needville, and were back on offense with a vengeance with three consecutive singles by Gwyn Katterhenry, Brooklyn Marks, and Layla Yslas, followed by a three-run BOMB over dead center by Hibbetts, putting the score at 5-0. Needville made a weak comeback with one run in the bottom of the 5th inning, but it was too little too late. Katterhenry started the game, pitching four innings with 4Ks. Kiersh appeared in relief.
