The Spartans continued pre-season scrimmages this week against Mayde Creek and Katy Taylor.

vs. Mayde Creek – Win (5-1)

The Spartans came to play during their first home outing against Mayde Creek on Tuesday. Layla Yslas put us on the board with a 3-run double to left field, scoring Marielle Kiersh, Gwyn Katterhenry, and Brooklyn Marks, who were all on base via walks. Mayde Creek answered back with one run in the third, but the Spartans further broke away in the 4th inning adding 2 more runs after a single by Shelby Thibodeaux, a double by Aashna Kapoor, and a fielder’s choice by Sophie Donnel. The defense was solid, as the Spartans kept Mayde Creek to one run over 4 innings. Katterhenry and Kiersh tag-teamed the game in the circle,  combining for 7 strikeouts. The highlight of the night was a relay in from left fielder Katterhenry to shortstop Sofia Grunenberg to third baseman Elizabeth McGuire, who tagged the runner attempting to advance to third base.

vs. Katy Taylor – Loss (2-5)

Despite out-hitting Katy Taylor on Friday, the Mustangs walked away with the win. The Spartans opened up the game with a single by Gwyn Katterhenry, a sacrifice bunt by Brooklyn Marks, and another single by Layla Yslas, but they were unable to put any runs on the board. The Spartans put the Mustangs down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the first. Again, the Spartans were unable to convert offensive action into runs as Marielle Kiersh singled, Callie Piercy walked, and Sophie Donnel singled, leaving 3 runners stranded in the second inning. Katy Taylor hit a solo home run in the bottom of the second, and added another run in the third putting the score at 0-2. Stratford answered back with 2 runs in the 4th as Katterhenry was able to get on by an error, a walk by Marks, and another single by Yslas. Katy Taylor added 3 runs in the bottom of the 4th, and the Spartans had no time to come back . Katterhenry started in the circle for the Spartans, pitching 2 innings with 3Ks. Kiersh came in relief, pitching 2 innings with 2Ks.
