Thursday 1/23 SHS Varsity at Jersey Village

The game was rescheduled due to the bad weather associated with the snowstorm that impacted Houston. Jersey Village always plays us tough and seem to be always able to play us physically in their gym. The game started off well. At the end of the first quarter, we led 14-9. We had very balanced scoring, with CJ Daniels and JD Cheeves leading the way with four points each, Elliot Harlan scoring three, Joaquin Andrews chipping in with two, and Kobe Hines making a free throw.

In the second quarter, we continued our stellar play and scored two more points than we did in the first quarter (16), which if you follow us, scoring has been an issue from time to time. Jersey Village scored 12 in the quarter, which gave us a 30-21 lead. In the second quarter, Joaquin led us with seven points, Trent Burke scored five, and JD scored four.

The third quarter started off well, but mid-way through the quarter, we allowed them to make a run. We had some untimely turnovers and missed shots, even though we scored 16 in the quarter. But the turnovers led to easy buckets for Jersey Village that allowed them to score 23 points in the quarter. Our lead at the end of the quarter was down to two, 46-44. In the quarter, Joaquin and JD both scored five and KobeTrent, and Elliot chipped in with two apiece.

In the final quarter, we really settled down and methodically picked them a part. In the first three minutes of the quarter, we went on a 10-0 run to basically seal the game. After that 3-minute run, we coasted home and brought home a much-needed win. In the quarter, Joaquin and Elliot scored eight points each, CJ scored six, and JD scored four in the 72-55 victory.

Final scoring tallies were Joaquin with 22 points, JD with 17, 13 for Elliot, 10 for CJTrent with seven, and Kobe with three.

Due to the schedule change, we have to play back-to-back games and will play at Cy Fair tomorrow. It will be a very big game for us, as they are tied for the District lead and we lost to them in the first round by one point in overtime.

Friday 1/24 SHS Varsity at Cy-Fair

It was a big game, a very good atmosphere, and there was a lot of tension in the air! Cy Fair started strong scoring the first point on an emphatic dunk. There was a lull in scoring for about 2 minutes, but then both teams settled down. We really came to play in this game and let them know this was not going to be an easy game. At the end of the quarter, we led 12-9. For the quarter, CJ Daniels led us in scoring with six quick points and Joaquin AndrewsJD Cheeves, and Trent Burke chipped in with two points apiece.

In the second quarter, Cy Fair made some runs and tried to take control of the game by outscoring us 15-7. Most of the damage was done in the last minute and a half of the quarter. The halftime score was 19-24. Joaquin led us in the quarter with five points, and JD scored two.

In the 3rd quarter, we really played well! We scored 19 points in the quarter and held Cy Fair to only nine points! CJ was really cooking in the quarter with seven points, Trent made a three and key 2-pointer for five points, JD continued his baseline mastery with four points, and Joaquin contributed three points. It was an excellent quarter for the Spartans!

As with all away games, the home team always makes a run. In this case, the run was not made until there were 50 seconds left in the game. At the end of the third, we led 38-33, and we extended the lead to 12 with great offensive execution and key defensive stops. Joaquin was stellar blocking shots and rebounding, JD sacrificed his overall offensive game to defend their best player and made him earn all his points, and Kenneth Owen came in for spot duty and played his defensive role expertly! It all came together for us to have an extremely comfortable lead with about a minute to play………………………Then Cy Fair started pressing, and we just did not handle the press well.

Incredibly, within a 10-second span, last year’s District player of the year scored eight points to cut our lead to two with under 10 seconds. We called a timeout, regrouped, settled down, and Elliot made two key free throws to help seal the deal. It was a huge victory for us albeit a bit closer than it should have been, but a victory nonetheless, 56-53! In the quarter, Joaquin showed his dominance with 10 points, Trent knocked down a three, Elliot made three key free throws, and JD contributed two points.

For the game, Joaquin led us with 20 points, CJ had 13, Trent and JD each contributed 10, and Elliot chipped in with three.

There will be a big home stand game on Tuesday. Cy Falls is tied for first place in the District, and we lost to them at their place by nine. We need the support of the community to help spur our boys to victory! The game starts at 7:00 pm! Let’s show up and make it loud!
