Wednesday 1/15 at Cy Creek

It was a tough opponent and tough environment to play in, but the Spartans competed throughout! As expected, Creek came out aggressive and fast. Their guard play was stellar as expected and contributed to their lead of 12-20 at the end of the first quarter. We had some opportunities to score a couple more points, but we missed some shots that we normally make and had some untimely turnovers. We were led in scoring for the quarter with Joaquin Andrew's with five points, JD Cheeves scored four, Kobe Hines scored two, and CJ Williams had one free throw. In the second quarter, our defense stiffened and significantly reduced their offensive output by holding them to only eight points. Unfortunately, we were not able to significantly take advantage of the defensive improvement, because we were only able to score 10 points. We were led in scoring in the quarter by Kobe with six points on fearless drives to the rim and two points each by Trent Burke and CJ. At halftime we were down 22-28.

Starting the second half, we were not able to sustain our defensive prowess and allowed them to score 19 points in the quarter, while we were only able to score 12. We had some uncharacteristic over-passing in the quarter that caused too many turnovers. We were led in scoring by JD with six points, followed by four points by Joaquinand two points by CJ. We were able to outscore them in two of the four quarters, but not by enough points to help us win. The final score was 47-58.

For the game Kobe led us with 16 points, Joaquin scored 11, JD scored 10, CJ contributed eight, and Trent scored two.

Saturday 1/18 vs. Northbrook

This was the final game of the first round of District play. Unfortunately, the injury bug has hit us again. Earlier this year, Jake Lovoi was lost for the season with a back injury; CJ Williams was lost for multiple games with knee and wrist injuries; Joaquin Andrews was lost for three weeks with knee and ankle injuries, and now Vasili Fakaris is potentially out for three weeks due to a severe ankle injury. The injury bug has not been kind to the Spartan Basketball  Team this year, and our trainers have been extremely busy with us this year!

The game was anticlimactic as we won the game 83-23, but there were some noteworthy contributions. Joe Selinsky led all scorers with 18 points, all on 3-pointers. He was 6-7 from the field and displayed a very impressive shooting stroke! Andrew Marks also showcased a very good shooting touch with five points off a 3-pointer and a nice mid-range jumper. Cameron Couchu contributed four points, Kenneth Owens scored six points, Elliot Harlan had five, and Kobe Hines contributed two points. Joaquin scored 14 points, CJ scored 13, and JD Cheeves and Trent Burke each scored eight.

The highlight of the game, besides Joe, was the Stratford Unified game at halftime. There were some awesome shots made and a lot of fun had by all during the halftime festivities. It was a great event for all involved.

Congratulations to our own Trent Joaquin Andrews for being nominated to this year’s McDonald’s All-American Game. The final team will be announced later this year and this year’s game will be April 1st at the Barclay’s Center in Brooklyn, NY. Let’s hope Joaquin is selected to represent Stratford America in this prestigious event!

Next week is a big week. We start the second round of District with two critical road games against Jersey Village on Tuesday and Cy Fair on Friday. Our District record is 4-3, firmly in fourth place.
