JV vs. Cy Ridge: Wednesday, January 8 - WIN: 62-44

It was a “slowish start” for the Spartans at home against Cy Ridge. A pesky Cy Ridge team was led by a creative shooting guard (remember #4)—who seemed to light it up from everywhere (including several threes). The score was tied at the end of the first quarter.

Alex and Ben Harris were fortunate recipients of a number of assists from the duo of Teagan Tedrow and Cody Hanlen, leading to a flurry of transition scores and pick and roll/back-door layups, especially toward the end of the 2nd quarter and through a large part of the second half. Stratford also took advantage of Cy Ridge's foul troubles, converting a series of free throws. The Spartans extended their lead to 9 at the half, and by the early fourth quarter had grown the lead to nearly 30.

Ben Harris led with a season-high of 28 points (including three 3s), followed by Alex Harris with 18. Cody Hanlen added 8, Teagan Tedrow added 5 (including a nice early 3), and Gabe Elizondo contributed 2.

JV vs. Memorial: Saturday, January 11 - LOSS: 58-54

What do you expect from these two historic rivals? A lot of back-and-forth, right? Well, early Saturday morning at Don Coleman Coliseum the JV Spartans and JV Mustangs gave an evenly divided crowd a hard-fought fight, but it ended in a heartbreaking loss for the Spartans.

With a sleepy start from both clubs, the Mustangs held a slight edge with the first quarter, up 15-14. Apart from a three-pointer from Jay Frazier (one of three he had during the game), the second quarter was pretty tough on the Stratford group. They suffered from several backdoor layups and put-backs from Memorial’s two big guys. As such, by halftime, Memorial had built their lead to 33-22.

The Mustangs continued to pressure early in the 3rd quarter, growing their largest lead to 40-28. Then Frazier sparked the Spartans' first comeback with a crowd-pleasing, contested three-pointer followed by a series of buckets from Ben Harris, Alex Harrisand Cody Hanlen. By the end of the 3rd quarter, the Mustangs were only up by 3, 44-41.

Following a couple of costly turnovers, Stratford found itself trailing 48-41. Then came the second comeback. Hanlen and B. Harris combined for 10 straight points with the Spartans actually taking a 51-48 lead with about two minutes left. Then it was Memorial’s turn for a run. Within a couple of minutes, the score had reversed with the Mustangs up 56-51. B. Harris countered with a corner three-pointer to bring Stratford within 2 at 56-54. The always-tough Stratford full-court press and trap secured a jump ball possession on the subsequent Memorial inbound, but the team could not convert the two needed to tie, and the Mustangs secured the game with two free throws in the closing seconds.

Ben Harris led the Spartans with 26, and Jay Frazier and Alex Harris followed with 9 each. Cody Hanlen added 5 and numerous key assists. Xavier put in a 3 early on. Will Ubell put in a bucket, but his hustle was felt on all parts of the court.

The team looks forward to a rematch later in the season.
