On Friday December 20th , the JV-B Boys Soccer Team played their third scrimmage that followed a 4-0 win over Bellaire High on Saturday, December 14th and a 3-0 win over Katy Paetow at Legacy Stadium on Tuesday, the 17th . This game against Cy Springs was their first home game, and the boys came ready to show that they mean business.
Coach Foster-Davison started the boys on a 4-3-3 formation with #24 Rondo Muon on left back (LB), #17 Bruno Sancio and #3 Ediel Gutierrez as center backs (CB), and #7 Ethan Ko as right back (RB).
The midfield was comprised of #8 Matthew Murillo as left midfield (LM), #6 Atticus Mennes as center mid (CM), and #14 Gavin Sierra as right mid (RM).
The forwards included #19 Matthew Mai as a left winger, #9 Felipe Medina as striker, and #4 Atticus Rigo as right winger.
#00 Mateo Pineda Sebastian started out as goalkeeper.
The game started off with a few fast-paced attacks by Cy Springs while Stratford found their footing in the midfield. However, the tide quickly turned to a game that was dominated by Stratford. At 3 minutes, Felipe Medina was fouled on about the 25 meter line. The kick by Ehan Ko was a solid shot that was just tipped by the goalkeeper to save the goal.
At 11 minutes, Cy Springs took a corner kick that led to some pinball in the box that put all of us in the bleachers on the edge of our seats. Fortunately, Stratford was able to eventually clear it out.
Stratford was unable to complete on several free kicks, until 24 minutes, when a free kick taken by #12 David Garcia hit the barrier and went wide for a corner kick. Two plays later, #23 Daniel Torres kicked another corner kick high into the box and found #5 Xavier Saenz for an unstoppable header that was well-positioned to the top right of the goal (SHS 1 – CSHS 0). This was enough for Stratford to stay up for the rest of the game thanks to dominance by Stratford on the attack throughout the second half and a well-positioned defense that anticipated Cy Springs and quickly thwarted their advances.
Stratford ended with one yellow card to David Garcia for a push play in the midfield.
