Swim & Dive Team Showcases Depth at SBISD Invitational

The Stratford Swimming and Diving Team showcased impressive depth this weekend at the SBISD Invitational with a strong showing against teams from eight other high schools, including Memorial, Flour Bluff, Fort Bend Dulles, Bellaire, Houston Christian, Spring Woods, St. Thomas, and Northbrook.

Despite missing more than a dozen swimmers who were competing at club meets, the Spartan Swim Team finished 3rd overall. Additionally, Stratford had enough swimmers to field a second team (“SHS Green”), which finished 6th overall. Memorial and Flour Bluff also brought two teams.

Top places included senior Marin Pavlin’s win in the 100 yard backstroke with a time of 58:09 and sophomore Matthew Huntsman’s win in the 100 yard butterfly with a time of 57.54. The Boys A Team won the 200 freestyle relay with a time of 1:31.34, with Huntsman (23.34), senior Ricky Conticello (22.44), sophomore Wade Hicks (22.89), and Pavlin (22.67).

Senior Korbin Irvine led Stratford’s divers, taking 1st place in both the 1m competition, with a score of 376.40, and 3m with 208.00. Sophomore Fernando Castillo finished 3rd in the 1m with 270.30. In the girls' event, junior Makayla Legaspi finished 3rd in both the 1m, with 279.15, and the 3m with 133.65.

Girls 200 Medley Relay

  • A Team finished 3rd (2:02.68) with junior Elizabeth Conner (back, 31.55), freshman Paige Buri (breast, 33.93), freshman Charlotte Moore (fly, 30.02), and sophomore Maria Luisa Becerra Arreola (free, 27.18)
  • B Team finished 6th (2:11.70) with senior Hana Riley (back, 33.14), junior Emmie Hanvey (breast, 37.27), freshman Kate Homer (fly, 33.39), and sophomore Piper Barrow (free, 27.90)
  • SHS Green A Team finished 8th (2:14.41) with junior Leah Claire Nall (back, 34.96), sophomore Audrey Bown (breast, 39.00), freshman Emma McLean (fly, 31.31), and sophomore Jill Hyland (free, 29.14)
  • SHS Green B Team finished 11th (2:21.92) with freshman Caroline Culbertson (back, 34.71), sophomore Emily Pace (breast, 41.89), freshman Claire Culbertson (fly, 32.94), and senior Anna Craig (free, 32.38)

 

Boys 200 Medley Relay

  • A Team was 6th (1:52.32) with sophomore Luke Ickes (back, 28.05), sophomore Brady Herring (breast, 34.45), Huntsman (fly, 24.88), and junior Gavin Rump (free, 24.94)
  • SHS Green A Team placed 9th (1:55.24) with junior Diego Oliver (back, 32.06), sophomore Binh Mai (breast, 32:47), sophomore Max Bednar (fly, 26.09), and junior Charlie Moore (free, 24.62)
  • SHS Green B Team finished 11th (1:59.34) with sophomore Charlie Amis (back, 31.56), freshman Walter Coffey (breast, 33.32), junior Delsyn Brisbin (fly, 28.93), and sophomore Carter Phillips (free, 25.53)

 

Girls 200 Free Relay

  • A Team finished 3rd (1:50.41) with Hanvey (28.08), Charlotte Moore (27.20), Barrow (28.28), and Conner (26.85)
  • SHS Green B Team placed 9th (2:05.06) with Pace (32.69), Craig (32.42), Claire Culbertson (29.42), and Bown (30.53)

 

Boys 200 Free Relay

  • A Team finished 1st (1:31.34) with Huntsman (23.34), Conticello (22.44), Hicks (22.89), and Pavlin (22.67)
  • B Team finished 6th (1:40.27) with Rump (25.57), Herring (25.48), senior Devon Beals (24.46), and Ickes (24.76)
  • SHS Green A Team placed 8th (1:41.67) with Charlie Moore (25.49), Brisbin (27.19), Mai (25.97), and Bednar (23.02)
  • SHS Green B Team placed 11th (1:46.03) with Oliver (27.83), Coffey (27.69), Amis (25.66), and Phillips (24.85)

 

Girls 400 Free Relay

  • A Team finished 4th (4:15.65) with Buri (1:04.28), Homer, Riley, and Becerra (all individual times not available)
