Tuesday 11/12 SHS vs. Houston Christian
This was a great opening season matchup to start our home slate of games! Houston Christian has developed one of the better private school programs in the city, so we knew playing them was going to be tough. In front of a very well-attended crowd this early in the season, we came out very aggressively and scored 15 points in the first quarter, which gave us a slight 5-point lead. Our execution was very precise, and we were able to capitalize on some of their miscues for easy buckets. In the second quarter, we continued our excellent play and were up by 17 points midway through the 2nd quarter but ended the half with only a 10-point lead, 30-20.
After halftime, HC made a serious run at us, partly due to some of our mistakes, but also because we could not make shots. At the end of the 3rd quarter, we were down 2, but it was still a very exciting and close game. During the 4th quarter, we just could not get the key stops needed or make the key shots needed to win the game, and we ended up losing by five, 53-58. It was an overall good game by our boys, but we came a bit short. Games like this will help us tremendously as the season progresses.
Joaquin Andrews led our scoring with 14 points, CJ Williams chipped in with 12 points, Vasili Fakaris scored 9, both JD Cheeves and Elliot Harlen chipped in with five points, and Kobe Hines and Cameron Couchu contributed four a piece.
DOGHOUSE INVITATIONAL BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT AT MAGNOLIA HIGH SCHOOL
Thursday 11/14 SHS vs. San Antonio Reagan
Our first game in this tournament was a very tough one! SA Reagan was a very well-coached and physical basketball team. In the first half, we played a bit flat, and SAR took full advantage of it by aggressively defending our motion offense, switching between a man-to-man and zone defense. They also shot lights-out behind the 3-point line. The switching defense slowed our offense down and at halftime, we were down by 10 points. After halftime, we made a serious run and cut the lead down to four points midway through the fourth quarter. But SAR remained poised, executed down the stretch, and closed us out with a 9-point victory, 53-45. We battled and learned a lot in this game that will hopefully help us in the future.
Friday 11/15 SHS vs. Fulshear
Because of our loss, we played in the consolation bracket of the tournament. Our first game was at 9 am, and traditionally we do not play well in early games. Fulshear was a very talented and physical basketball team. We started out playing very well and had an 18-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. In the second half, Fulshear ramped up the intensity, but we continued to match it with both teams scoring 10 points in the quarter. We maintained our 16 point lead with a halftime score of 28-12. The second half was just a race to maintain our lead and work on offensive and defensive execution. We failed to comfortably pull away from them, but we maintained our 10-point margin throughout the game and ended up with a 55-45 victory. Good bounce-back game for us after two tough losses. We made some improvements but still have some work to do.
Joaquin was our leading scorer with 19 points, CJ knocked down 10 points, Trent Burke contributed 7 points, Vasili and JD chipped in with three a piece, Couchu and Logan Hatcher each scored 2 points, and Kobe contributed a point, two steals, and a couple of assists.
Friday 11/15 SHS vs. SA Port O’Connor
Our second game on Friday was a physical contest, as O’Connor had a 6’7” 250-pound center and another 6’7” forward. The game was very competitive and close throughout. O’Connor led most of the game but never led by more than five points. Final score was 52-56. Learning how to play against skilled size will help us in the future. We tried to front the post, but our help was a bit slow in reacting, which led to some easy scores for them. They also held a rebound advantage over us, but it was not due to lack of effort. If we play them again, I am confident we will come up victorious!!
On offense, our skill, and our speed caused them issues, as Joaquin scored 19 points, and JD contributed 15 points. The senior trio of Vasili (6), Elliot (3) and Jake Lovoi (2) contributed 11 points. Our young playmakers, Trent Burke (4) and CJ Williams (3) scored a total of seven, and Kobe Hines played a big part in creating extra possessions through his defensive prowess. We are seeing our young talent grow each and every time they step on the court.
Saturday 11/16 SHS vs. Klein
Our last game of the tournament was a victory, but we did not play well at the end of the game. We had a 10-point lead with one minute to play and only won by five points, 50-45. Again, another learning experience for us, as we have to execute down the stretch with a lead when teams apply pressure trying for a comeback. But with that said, the final score should not take away from the excellent performance by Williams to pace our victory. He scored 20 points on an array of sweet jump shots all over the court. Hines, another young playmaker who has been improving in rapid fashion, contributed seven points. JD scored nine points, Vasili chipped in with 5, Kenneth Owen (KMO) probably played one of his better games for SHS and contributed four points, and Joaquin chipped in with two.
Next week we travel to San Antonio for the South San Tournament. Go Volleyball and Football on their impressive playoff runs!! What a great time to be a Spartan!!!!!
