At the Region III meet, the first four teams and the top ten individuals not already on one of the advancing teams qualify for the State Championship. The pressure was on for Varsity squads. The course was dry and dusty with varying terrain and the later-than-usual start time provided an additional challenge.
VARSITY BOYS
The Varsity Boys earned a 7th place team finish out 24 teams, missing out on a team qualification for State but finishing ahead of District rival Memorial. Senior Ben Pearce ran an incredible race to finish as Region Champion and individual State qualifier. Battling with Katy’s top runner for the first 2 miles, Ben pulled ahead in the final mile to cross the finish line all alone in a new PR of 15:08.4. That moves Ben up to the number two spot on the Stratford all-time list, just half a second behind former Stratford star Emanuel Galdino’s 15:07.8 school record.
Senior Andrew Hopkins ran a strong race from start to finish, clocking his fastest time ever on this course and just narrowly missing out on qualifying for State. Junior Eli Roberts contributed a solid performance, setting a new PR on a very tough course. We’re proud of all the Varsity Boys for their hard work and contributions to the team this season.

VARSITY GIRLS
The Varsity Girls Team finished in 16th place out of 24 teams, missing a trip to State but gaining valuable race experience against some of their toughest competition. All five scoring runners finished within nearly 30 seconds of each other. Much of the Varsity girls' success this season can be attributed to their tight pack running, and they will all return to the team next year. Junior Laura Gonzalez was the top Spartan finisher and set a new PR to cap off her season. We’re very proud of the Varsity Girls Team and look forward to watching them compete on the track this spring.
