The Spartan Girls Water Polo Team is back in the pool and looking to build on the success of last year’s Area Championship and Regional Quarterfinals playoff run. The girls are led by Varsity Team Captains/Seniors Hana Riley, Avery Garcia, & Elle Burke and Senior Sarah Beth Roady. Juniors Emmie Hanvey, Leah Claire Nall, Molly Kate Minyard, Elizabeth Conner, Bella Smith, & Abby Middlebrooks round out the upperclassmen on the roster.
Sophomores Audrey Bown, Luisa Becerra, Emily Pace, Piper Barrow, & Jill Hyland look to make important contributions along with Freshmen team members Charlotte Moore, Claire Culbertson, Paige Buri, Kate Homer, Caroline Culbertson, Emma McLean, & Julia Cvetkovic.
Second-year Head Coach Joseph McCommons and returning assistant coaches Casandra Brisbin and Blocker Duncan have the girls off to a great start with a challenging schedule that will see them fighting it out in the pool with Texas Water Polo Elite during the season and at three state-wide tournaments in the first three weeks of the school year.
The first game of the 2024 season (Thursday, August 8th) saw the Spartans face last year’s State Semifinalist Brazoswood at the SBISD Natatorium. All eligible Spartans saw pool time in either the JV game or the Varsity match-up and everyone got valuable experience working together and executing plays. The strong and focused Buccaneer squad was too much to overcome and, despite great sprinting, tough defense, and a twisting goal by Captain Riley set up by a beautiful pass from Captain Garcia, the Spartans fell 20-1.
Next up is the 3rd Annual CFISD Varsity Water Polo Tournament where the Spartans will face
2023 Regional Finalist Cypress Creek and Dallas-area powerhouse Highland Park in pool play.
The girls will play their first placement game Friday morning, with additional matches to follow Friday afternoon and Saturday at the CFISD Natatorium.
