Varsity Softball Loses Close One to Memorial, Routs Jersey Village 20-10

The Spartans wrapped up District play this past week, going 1-1 against Memorial and Jersey Village. They are tied for 3rd in District with Cy Creek behind Memorial and Cy Fair. Varsity is heading to playoffs!! Games are to be scheduled to start this week!

 

vs. Memorial – Loss (4-9)

A tight game through the 5th inning, Memorial walked away on top last Tuesday. The Spartans fought hard until the last inning. Memorial opened the scoring in the first inning with one run. No runs scored by either team in the 2nd or 3rd innings. The Spartans put together one run in the 4th inning after a leadoff double by Elizabeth McGuire, followed by back-to-back sacrifice bunts by Ashlyn Bell and Layla Yslas. Memorial answered back with another run in the bottom of the 4th. Stratford was unable to score in the 5th inning, and unfortunately, Memorial put up 5 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning all on two outs. Stratford fought hard to scrap their way back, scoring three runs in the 6th inning from a double by Yslas, and singles by Aashna Kapoor and Caroline Chamberlain. Memorial added 2 runs to their lead in the bottom of the 6th, and Stratford was unable to score in the 7th after a single by Gwyn Katterhenry and two walks drawn by Allison Hibbetts and Bell. The Spartans walked away with the bases loaded, so close! Katterhenry took the loss for the Spartans, pitching 6 innings, striking out 6.

vs. Jersey Village – Win (20-10)

Yes, you are reading the score right, it was not a football game, but a softball game. Stratford went out with a bang Friday night, on SENIOR NIGHT, scoring 20 runs on 20 hits. What may be the longest game in history, both teams battled it out at the plate with a total of 14 RBIs by a combined effort led by Youngblood, Avalos, Bell, Katterhenry, and McGuireKatterhenry earned the win for the Spartans, throwing 5 innings. Kapoor closed out the game in the last remaining inning, with a 3 up, 3 down inning.
