Stratford JV Spartans vs. Memorial JV Mustangs, Wednesday, April 17th

GAME 1

The Spartans hosted the Mustangs for a double header last Wednesday night. The first game started off with the Mustangs scoring seven runs in the first inning. Levi Lease started the game for the Spartans, and while looking good on the mound, he just was not getting those called strikes. Stratford was able to get one run in the bottom of the first.

Cole Youngblood collected one hit and Brandon Phillips added a double for Stratford. The Spartans turned one double play in the game and tallied seven walks. The other pitchers helping in relief for the Spartans, included Pacer Daniel (1K), William Coates (1K) and Youngblood closed out the game with 5 strike outs. The Mustangs took game 1, 12-3.

GAME 2

This game seemed to remind me of the Ump-rah Winfrey show, “you get a walk, and you get a walk,” with the ump having a very small strike zone. However, the umpire was consistent calling balls on both teams, tallying up 17 walks in the game.

Game two of the night was much different than the 1st game. This game was a pitching duel with Ranes Denman taking on Lester Stiles. The Spartans were the first to score when Ryan Lamon doubled, scoring one run in the first. The Mustangs did tie the game in the top of the second, 1-1. Memorial took the lead 2-1 in the top of the fifth. Denman pitched a great game, going 6 innings with one hit, six strike outs with two runs. Will Tacker came in to pitch the seventh inning with one strike out, and 2 hits.

Lamon led the team (2-3, two doubles, RBI) with Gavin Mundwiller adding a double, and Brandon Phillips, Jack Sullivan, and Luke Tamez all getting singles for the Spartans. Memorial took game 2, 2-1.

This was a game more in the style of a Stratford vs. Memorial game - close, competitive, and fun. Both teams are talented and for the next few years, we should see some good games between these rivals.

The last games of the season will be this week against Jersey Village. Come out and cheer on your JV Spartans!
