The Stratford JV Spartans traveled to Strake Jesuit College Preparatory this past weekend and flexed their muscle with a four-game sweep in the Tournament.

vs. Manvel

Thursday began with a sound 9-0 victory over the Manvel Mavericks. Pace “the Ace” Daniel went five strong innings, striking out four while only giving up one hit. Will Tacker pitched the final inning, striking out the side. Leading hitters in the game were Jackson Fulweber, Cody Hanlen, and Brandon Phillips with two hits apiece while Zach Christie, Jack Sullivan, Pacer Daniel, and Chris Johnson added a hit apiece.

vs. Katy Taylor

In the second game, the Spartans beat Katy Taylor 7-4 with Cole Youngblood and William Coates providing solid pitching over five innings, striking out three and only giving up four runs. Leading hitters in the game were Carsten Vasut with three hits and Jack McAfee with two hits while Tacker, Christie, and Coates provided a hit apiece.

vs. Concordia Lutheran

Friday evening provided an epic battle with the Spartans proving they can win in different ways with a come-from-behind victory over Concordia Lutheran 2-1 in seven innings. Levi Lease was dominant on the mound, going four strong innings and not giving up an earned run while striking out five batters and pitching out of a jam in the 4th inning. Zach Christie was equally impressive over the last three innings, striking out five while keeping the Concordia Lutheran faithful at bay over the final inning. Leading hitters in the game were Brandon Phillips with two hits, showing his versatility by laying down a drag bunt to get the rally started in the 6th inning,  and Jackson Fulweber following with a quality at-bat base on balls that helped to set the table for the fireworks. Anthony Castillo followed with a bunt hit down the third base line, which tied the game, and Gavin Mundwiller produced a clutch hit to score Fulweber, which proved to be enough for the win. The win was the highlight of the Houston area that evening where the Spartans displayed solid pitching, small ball capability, as well as the ability to come back and win in a last at-bat situation.

vs. Strake Jesuit

Saturday morning the Spartans made another come-from-behind victory beating the Strake Jesuit Crusaders 8-5 in five innings. Nick Gioco went 2 2/3 innings, giving up 4 runs while striking out four. Will Tacker came in and pitched 1 1/3 to help the Spartans hold their lead. Freshman Jacksom Fulweber came in and slammed the door on the Crusaders, sending the Crusader faithful home not giving up a run and earning the save. Leading hitters in the game were Brandon Phillips and William Coates with two hits apiece while Christie, Tacker, and Daniel all collected a hit as well.
