Stratford Spartans vs. Clear Springs, Friday February 23rd

The first match-up on Day 2 against the Clear Springs Chargers proved to be a great early-season, playoff-atmosphere test for the Spartans. Thomas Cloud toed the rubber for Stratford and in usual fashion, was an absolute animal over 5 innings. He allowed 5 hits and 4 runs (only 1 earned) and battled a tough Charger lineup all morning. He worked his way out of a mini jam in the 4th when there were runners on second and third in a tie ball game. The big right-hander Cloud struck out the Clear Springs lead-off batter to keep the game tied at 3. The excitement of the 3-pitch strikeout set the tone for the last 3 innings from both dugouts.

Clear Springs would scratch out a couple of runs in the 4th. The teams would trade runs in the 5th with Wakefield remaining red-hot with a double and then coming around to score on an error by the Chargers, knotting up the score at 4 going into the 6th inning. Christian Ramirez came out of the bullpen in the 6th and sat down the Chargers 1-2-3 in the top half of the inning. Blake Barry led off the bottom of the 6th with a single, but the Spartans were unable to get him around and the score remained tied at 4. The top of the 7th saw Ramirez back out on the mound, and he delivered once again. The game would be tied up at 2 in the Top of the 4th when the Wolverines tied it up. The big right-hander was in control all game and proved to be too much for the Clear Springs Wolverines. In the Top of the 5th and with 2 outs, Coach Richards called upon the Junior lefty Ford Givens to get the team out of the inning with a 3-2 lead. It only took Givens 1 pitch to sit down the opponent and get out of the inning with a ground-out to Braxton WakefieldGivens would come out again for the 6th inning and holding a 3-2 lead, needing three outs to secure the second win of the day for the Spartans. Givens would strike out 1 and get two more outs via the fly ball and ground ball to give the boys a 2-0 record on Saturday.
