Varsity Softball Loses to Cy Fair, Goes 3-1 at SBISD Tourney

The Spartans are coming off an intense schedule, including two tournaments of 11 games in the last two weeks. They lost their first District game vs. Cy Fair on Tuesday, and then went 3-1 in the SBISD Softball Tournament they hosted at home.

 

vs. Cy Fair - Loss (3-6)

The Stratford Varsity Spartans attempted to come back in the bottom of the 6th inning, scoring 3 runs, but it was too little, too late and they were unable to overcome the 6-run lead Cy Fair had after 5 innings. The Bobcats out-hit the Spartans 8 to 4. The 6th inning comeback started off with Callie Piercy getting on base from a Bobcat error. Gwyn Katterhenry followed with a sacrifice bunt. Then there was a single by Allison Hibbetts followed by a forced error by Jessica YoungbloodIsabella Sanchez bunted into a fielder’s choice, and Elizabeth McGuire singled. Aashna Kapoor started on the mound for the Spartans. Katterhenry threw 3 innings in relief.

vs. Sealy – Loss (7-9)

The Spartans lost a nail-biter on Thursday in extra innings. Sealy got on the board first with a solo homerun in the 1st inning. The Spartans answered back when Aashna Kapoor drew a walk, followed by a sacrifice bunt by Callie Piercy, a single to center field by Gwyn Katterhenry, a double by Allison Hibbettsand a three-run BOMB by Layla Yslas. Sealy took advantage of an error and scored one run in the 2nd inning. Stratford put one more on the board in the second inning when Isabella Sanchez and Kapoor capitalized on a a couple of Sealy errors, followed by a walk drawn  by Katterherny and a single by Hibbetts. Sealy answered back with one run in the 4th, and then tied it in the 5th inning, forcing an extra inning as time expired. Stratford could not overcome three of their own errors in the 6th inning; it was a heartbreaking late loss. Katterhenry got the loss for the Spartans, allowing 7 hits and 4 earned runs while striking out 4.

vs. Jordan – Win (5-4)

Gwyn Katterhenry ended the game in dramatic fashion with a 5-4 walk-off double, scoring two runs for the victory over the Jordan Warriors. Jordan’s bats were hot and they were up 4-0 going into the bottom of the third inning. Alessia Avalos was hit by a pitch and scored on a single by Layla YslasElizabeth McGuire and Isabella Sanchez each drew walks in the 4th inning and scored on a ground ball hit by Avalos, making the score 3-4 going into the 5th inning. The Spartans held the Warriors in the top of the 5th inning, Aashna Kapoor singled in the top of the 5th inning followed by a walk drawn by YslasKatterhenry doubled to left center on a 2-0 count as time expired. Aashna Kapoor started the game for the Spartans going 2 innings, and Gwyn Katterhenry earned the win pitching 3 innings in relief, giving up 2 hits, 0 earned runs, walking 1, and striking out 4.

vs. Katy Taylor – Win (12-5)

Allison Hibbetts hit not one but TWO homeruns, driving in 6 runs for the Spartans as they defeated Katy Taylor on Saturday. The Spartans were down by 4 in the bottom of the first, when the Spartans flipped the game on its head scoring 7 runs on 6 hits to take the lead 7-4. The offensive drive consisted of singles by Aashna Kapoor and Layla Yslasa homerun by Hibbetts. and doubles by Gwyn Katterhenry and Callie Piercy. The Spartans added two more runs in the second inning with a double by Ashlyn Bell, followed by two singles by Piercy and Jessica Youngblood, and they wrapped up the offensive battle by adding 3 more runs in the bottom of the third with two doubles by Elizabeth McGuire and Yslas, followed by a second homerun hit by HibbettsKatterhenry started the game for the Spartans going 1 inning. Kapoor pitched 3 innings in relief.

vs. Splendora – Win (10-0)

The Spartans run-ruled the Splendora Wildcats on Saturday in a quick 4-inning game. Runners were in scoring positions after Elizabeth McGuire and Allison Hibbetts reached on error, Layla Yslas was hit-by-pitch, and Gwyn Katterhenry drew a walk. Ashlyn Bell stepped up to the plate, singling on a line drive to center field, and the score was 3-0 in the bottom of the 1st inning. The Spartans added 3 more runs in the bottom of the 3rd inning when Katterhenry, Callie Piercyand Esparza reached on errors, and Bell hit another single. 4 runs batted in in the 4th inning for the Spartans, led by back-to-back singles by Isabella Sanchez and Bell. Caroline Chamberlain drew a walk, and Esparza cleared the bases with a triple to center field. Kapoor sealed the deal for the run-rule as she hit a double to right field, scoring EsparzaKapoor earned the win for the Spartans, allowing only 2 hits and 3Ks in 4 IP.
