VARSITY - Fort Bend Marshall Buffalo Relays

It was an all-day affair at Hall Stadium in Missouri City on Saturday, but it felt more like an entire weekend. The Buffalo Relays is a massive track and field meet with a lot of competitors and a lot of heats. The field events started at 8:30 am and the last race of the day concluded after 6:00 pm. The long day of waiting, compounded by the cold, windy conditions made for a miserable day outdoors. That said, the early season event attracts top-level talent from around the Houston area, and despite the difficult conditions, the Spartans brought home some hardware.

During the early morning field events, Nate Grant and Jack Boyce got the Spartan boys on the board with second-place results in the Long Jump and Discus, respectively. Also faring well were Luke Rives ( 7th in Long Jump) and Joseph Netter (8th in Triple Jump).

During the afternoon session, our sprinters and distance guys got to work and posted more nice results. Luke Rives finished second overall in the 100m dash and Nate Grant was fifth. Our 4 x 100m relay team of Hunter Biehl, Nate Grant, Aaron DeLeon, and Luke Rives raised eyebrows when they won their heat in dominating fashion and placed third overall in a loaded field of sprint relay teams.

In the last event of the day for the Spartans, Daylan Rushing and Jona Morford crossed the finish line second and third place respectively in the 1600m run, just a few steps behind the race winner from Katy Tompkins.

On the girls' side, Niamh Collins fought the wind and the field on her way to a second place result, and Liza Heitmann looked strong in her 400m heat to finish fourth overall. We had a couple more top-10’s with Madelyn Nguyen earning eighth place in the Triple Jump, and Jillian Parks ninth in the Discus.
