The Spartans started their season off with a bang, going 5-1 in the Katy ISD Softball Tournament.

 

vs. Humble - Win (9-1)

The Stratford Varsity Spartan Softball Team won big over the Humble Wildcats on Thursday. They jumped into the lead in the bottom of the first inning when Jessica Youngblood singled, scoring 3 runs, and Caroline Chamberlain hit a sacrifice fly, scoring one more. The Spartans added to their lead in the bottom of the second inning when Gwyn Katterhenry doubled, scoring 2 runs, followed by a single by Allison Hibbetts and then Chamberlain singled, scoring 1 more. Aashna Kapoor earned the win for the Spartans, allowing 5 hits and only 1 run.

vs. Katy Taylor – Win (6-4)

Allison Hibbetts drove in 4 runs on 3 hits to lead the Varsity Spartans past Katy Taylor on Thursday. Aashna Kapoor singled to lead off the Spartans and then Hibbetts doubled in the first inning,  scoring 2. Katy Taylor took advantage of on error to go ahead 3-2 after the third inning, but the Spartans answered back as Hibbetts hit a solo home run in the 4th inning to tie it up. In the 5th inning, Callie Piercy singled and Gwyn Katterhenry broke up the tie when she doubled, scoring 2 runs followed by a single by Hibbetts to extend the lead to 6-3. Isabella Sanchez had a great day at the plate going 2-2 along with a long-battled walk. Katterhenry earned the win for the Spartans, allowing 4 hits and 4 runs while striking out 5.

vs. Cy Ranch – Loss (15-2)

The Cy Ranch Mustangs unfortunately had our number in this outing, despite the Spartans having won the last contest against them earlier in February. It was a brutal loss, one which we plan to avenge given the chance! The Spartans struggled defensively in the field, as well as at the plate, collecting only 5 hits total, Isabella Sanchez singled and scored 2 RBIs and Alessia Avalos, Callie Piercy, and Jessica Youngblood collected one hit each. Aashna Kapoor and Gwyn Katterhenry tried to rally against the Mustang offense, who offensively racked up 14 hits total.

vs. Mayde Creek – Win (9-1)

After a scoreless 2 innings, Aashna Kapoor singled, followed by another single by Gwyn Katterhenry. Allison Hibbetts then got hit by a pitch to load the bases, and Isabella Sanchez drew a walk to score one run. Mayde Creek answered back with one run to tie the game in the bottom of the 3rd inning. The Spartans broke into the lead in the 4th inning after Elizabeth McGuire, Kaitlyn McGuire, and Caroline Chamberlain drew walks and Katterhenry singled, scoring 2 runs. Hibbetts, Jessica Youngblood, and Alessia Avalos singled, and combined with a couple of errors by Mayde Creek, the Spartans jumped into the lead 9-1. Kapoor earned the win for the Spartans, allowing only 2 hits and 1 run while striking out 3 and walking none.

vs. Cy Park – Win (10-0)

Cy Park was no match for the Spartans: it was a quick game, the score was 10-0, and there were 0 hits by the Spartans. They drew a total of 11 walks. Kapoor earned the win for the Spartans, allowing only 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 5.

Defensive Highlights:

Kapoor: 4IP, 1H, 0R, 0ER, 1BB, 5K

Kaitlyn McGuire caught a fly ball in center field and threw a runner on third out at home who attempted to tag up for a double play. Great tag at the plate by Jessica Youngblood!

 

vs. Seven Lakes – Win (9-3)

After a scoreless 2 innings, Aashna Kapoor singled in the 3rd, scoring Alessia Avalos. The score was 1-0 going into the 4th inning when the Spartans came alive at the plate. Elizabeth McGuire singled, combined with a couple of Seven Lakes errors and followed up by singles from Callie Piercy, Allison Hibbetts, and back-to-back doubles by Caroline Chamberlain and Jessica Youngblood, the Spartans increased the lead to 9-0. Seven Lakes attempted a last half-inning comeback, but it was too little, too late. E. McGuire led the Spartans' offense; the freshman went 2 for 3 at the plate. Katterhenry earned the win for the Spartans, allowing only 1 hit and 0 runs over 3 innings, striking out 8 and walking 4. Kapoor appeared in relief for the last inning.
