SHS vs. NHS 1/31/24

The JV Lady Spartans Soccer Team traveled to Northbrook High School for their 3rd District game on Wednesday, January 31st. They finally got to play a game where it wasn’t cold or rainy. It made for a beautiful night of soccer.

It was clear from the 1st kick off that NHS wasn’t going to be able to keep up with our girls. 7 minutes in, we got a corner kick that was taken by Trysta Truong. It bounced off one of their defenders out to a waiting Morgan Longwho one-touched it in for a goal. SHS 1 - NHS 0. On the kickoff, Nicole Abbey ran up and took it away. She dribbled through the team for a one-on-one and scored, making it SHS 2 - NHS 0. For about 10 minutes, our team played keep-away. Everyone touched the ball and it was a nice display of passing. With about 16 minutes left, Lily Terveen won the ball in the back and dribbled up the left sideline. She had a nice cross to Kaija Sola, who tried to put it in but it bounced off the goalie. However, Bella Saavedra was at the top of the box waiting and was able to put it in for a goal making it SHS 3 - NHS 0. Another 10 minutes of keep-away before we got the go-ahead to score again, so with about 3 min left, Katherine Fowler threw the ball into Troung. She dribbled all the way down the left side line and crossed it to the top of the box. Abbey was there and tapped it in for a goal. SHS 4 - NHS 0.

The girls started off the 2nd half with more keep-away. We saw some great passing, moving, and communication. At the 10 minute mark, the girls were once again given the go-ahead to score. They didn’t waste any time. At the 25 minute mark, Julia Wolf threw the ball into Sola, who laid it to Saavedra in the middle of the box. The ball got tangled up with the defenders and she just couldn’t put it in, but Abbey came crashing in and pounded it into the back of the net. SHS 5 - NHS 0. 5 minutes later after tons of passing, the ball ended up at Claire Lamon’s feet. She dribbled about 20 yards before hitting a beautiful upper 90 shot that cleared the goalie for a goal to make it SHS 6 - NHS 0. With 10 minutes left, the ball was laid through their defensive back line. It looked like their defense would clear it out, but Ella Bui came out of nowhere to bust through 3 defenders before putting the ball in the back of the net. SHS 7 - NHS 0. With about 4 minutes left, we showed off more great passing before the ball ended up at Saavedra’s feet. She took it down and crossed it to a running Truong, who had a great finish to make it a final score of SHS 8 - NHS 0.

SHS vs. SWHS 2/3/24

The Lady Spartans hosted Spring Woods High School on Saturday, February 2. It was another rainy morning, but thankfully the rain stopped just in time for the game to begin. There was a lot of passing between all the players from the get-go. Nice movement from Claire Lamon up to Maddison Gallerano on to Trysta Truong, who passed to Kaija Sola a on to Katherine Fowler, whose shot on goal was batted away by the goalie. Fowler threw the ball in to Morgan Longwho laid the ball to Gallerano and back to Longwho passed to Nicole Abbey with a quick breakaway up the field. Her shot bounced off a SWHS defender and landed at the feet of Ella Buiwho shot at the goal for our first score on the board:  SHS 1 - SWHS 0. With 27 minutes on the clock, Lamon passed to Long, onto Abbey whose strike on goal was batted away by the goalie. Sola was there to follow up, but the SW goalie got there first. A nice SHS pass string moved the ball up the field to Truong onto Bui, who laid it back to Gallerano with a kick 10 yards out that the SW goalkeeper batted away. At the 14 minute mark, Lamon kicked the ball up the field to Longwho crossed it in front of the goal. Truong attacked the ball and crossed it where Sylvia Castaneda laid it to Buiwhose shot was saved by the goalie. Again Sola was there to follow up, but the SW goalkeeper fell on the ball. With 11 minutes left, Sola intercepted the goal kick and the ball found Bella Saavedra, whose strike was batted away by the goalie. Bui made Stratford’s final shot at the goal before the half, but her shot was saved and the scoreboard remained SHS 1 - SWHS 0 at the buzzer.

The girls seemed to find their stride in the second half. At 32 minutes, a throw-in by Elizabeth Byrd landed at the feet of Meredith Cunningham, whose shot on goal hit the post. 30 minutes in, Abbey headed the goal kick. Movement between ByrdAbbey, and Bui kept it in play. The ball bounced back off a SW defender to Buiwhose shot also hit the post. Byrd laid the ball to Cunningham onto Abbey, whose shot was just wide. At the 19 minute mark, Lamon kicked the ball high up the field to Byrd, and the ball went out forcing a corner kick. Bui took the corner and played the ball to Gallerano, who passed to Julia Wolf, who laid the ball at the feet of Bui, who took a great shot on goal for a score of SHS 2 - SWHS 0. With 16 minutes left in the half, a corner from Truong to Long found Byrd to put the ball in goal and result in SHS 3 - SWHS 0 on the board. The girls were on a roll! A throw-in by Long found Truongwho shot and put goal #4 on the board. Then Long passed to Fowler on to Cate Shofner, whose strike was batted away by the goalie but kept in play by the SW defense and Shofner’s attack. The ball bounced off the SW defense and landed at Sola’s feet, who took a shot and made a goal: SHS 5 - SWHS 0. A great passing sequence between LamonByrdSolaand Truong, who laid it back to Gallerano allowed her to place a beautiful kick in goal. SHS 6 - SWHS 0. The last 5 minutes the Spartans played a game of keep-away. Great defense and communication between Lily TerveenLamon, and our goalkeeper Sophia Schulz held Spring Woods to no score. In the final minute, Gallerano played the ball up to Saavedra to Truong on to Byrd, whose shot was just wide. The final score was SHS 6 - SWHS 0.

The JV girls will play at Cy Ridge High School on Tuesday, February 6 and will play our highly anticipated game against Memorial High School at Stratford on Friday, February 9 at 5:30 pm. Come out and support your Lady Spartans!
