Preseason scrimmages continued this week for the Stratford Spartans, both Junior Varsity and Varsity teams played against Magnolia West and Katy Taylor.

VARSITY

vs. Magnolia West – Loss (4-7)

Even though the Stratford Varsity Spartans collected 4 hits to Magnolia West’s 3 hits, Stratford walked away with a loss last Tuesday. Unfortunately, the game started off a little rocky on defense, and the Spartans were unable to overcome the large deficit after the third inning. They scrapped together one run in the 2nd inning when Isabela Sanchez drew a walk, Gwyn Katterhenry singled, and Sofia Grunenberg drew another walk, allowing Ashlyn Bell to score on a wild pitch. They made a late run scoring 3 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning with back-to-back hits by Darcy Broaddus and Sophie Donnel, followed by a walk drawn by Caroline Chamberlain and another single by Elizabeth McGuire. Katterhenry took the loss for Stratford on the mound. She threw 5 innings, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3.

vs. Katy Taylor – Loss (3-4)

The Stratford Spartans suffered a tough late-inning loss to the Katy Taylor Mustangs on Friday. Stratford struck first when Callie Piercy doubled, followed by a double by Allison Hibbetts in the first inning. Stratford scored again when Aashna Kapoor singled in the 3rd inning followed by another double by Hibbetts, and they brought the lead to 3-0 in the 4th inning. Ashlyn Bell singled and was moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Youngblood, followed by Sofia Grunenberg's double. Katy Taylor made a late move, scoring 3 runs in the 4th inning and 1 run in the 5th inning to take the late lead 4-3. Kapoor started the game for the Spartans, throwing 3 scoreless innings. Gwyn Katterhenry came in to relieve in the 4th inning, pitching 3 innings and taking the loss.
