It was a tough week for your fighting Spartans. We fought valiantly in both contests, but just could do enough to get the victory. We end the first round of District play with a 5-2 record, tied for second place. We have positioned ourselves very well for a playoff berth, which would be a huge accomplishment, given the youth of the team. But there are games to be played and won before we can relax!!!!

SHS vs. Cy Fair (1/16)

The game was played at Cy Fair and was rescheduled from Tuesday (1/15) due to weather issues. We started the game well, with a 9-7 lead early in the first quarter. Then there were two questionable offensive charge calls on Joaquin Andrews, which really hurt our momentum, as we had to sub him out with two early fouls. Cy Fair took advantage and immediately went on a serious run, which we could not recover from. We fought to get it under 10 points, but just could not get there. The next game at home will be a very entertaining and competitive contest.

The leading scorers for the game were JD Cheeves with 14 points and Joaquin with 10 points. Jalen Jefferson scored eight points, Shia Francis had seven, and both Seven Francis and Vasili Fikaris each chipped in with five points.

SHS vs. Cy Creek

The last home game of the first round was against Cy Creek, and we knew it would be a tough one because they are an athletic and veteran team. Creek came out fast with a quick 5-0 run, which extended to the 7-2 lead early in the first quarter. For most of the game, Creek held a lead in the 8–12 point-range, but in the second half, we did cut the lead to five with a chance to make it even closer, but some ill-timed turnovers and missed shots allowed them to push the lead back up to pull out the victory. Love the fight in this team!!!

Loved to see the fans that came to the game, as they did make a difference in helping us compete the entire game. We will need that home-fan energy the rest of the year to help us achieve our playoff goal.

The leading scorers for the games were JD Cheeves with 12 points, Wes Wohfahrt with 11, and Seven Francis with 10 points. Joaquin Andrews contributed eight points, Jalen Jefferson scored four points, and Vasili Fikaris and Shia Francis each chipped in with two points.

Upcoming Games

Next week we start the second round of District. We open on the road against Northbrook on Wednesday (1/24) and on Saturday at home against Spring Woods (1/27). The second round games will be on a Wednesday/Saturday schedule due to the referee shortage.
