SHS vs. Cy Ridge (1/5)

This was our first home game against one of the Cy Fair schools. We played this game before school started, so we did not have as many fans as we would have liked but it did not matter; we played a very good game! It is clear that we have learned from our early season challenging schedule. We were worried about this game because it was the first one after a long break. While it did look like we lost a bit of our game conditioning, our execution and our teamwork was very apparent from the beginning.

Ridge has a very competitive team, but we were able to match their competitiveness with our own focus and determination. One slight change that has been quite evident and noticeable is our use of a full-court press. It has really allowed us to get steals, extra possessions, and some easy shots. Wes Wohfahrt and Jalen Jefferson are at the top of the press and provide excellent pressure, causing turnovers. Vasili Fakaris and JD Cheeves are the second level of the press and playing passing lanes very effectively. Finally, Joaquin Andrews is our last line of defense, and he has been very good at directing traffic, taking chances at steals, and slowing down any fast break on the back end to allow the team to recover. The plus with this team is as subs come in, there is very little drop-off on the defensive end!!!

Offensively, we are sharing the ball extremely well, passing quickly and helping our teammates get open. In this game, the leading scorers were Vasili and JD with 10 apiece, Seven Francis and Jalen added nine points each, Elliot Harlan and Shia Francis each chipped in with eight points, Wes and Joaquin each contributed seven points, and Kenneth Owen scored two. There was excellent scoring balance in this game that ended with a 70-58 victory. The game at Ridge next month will be a very good and competitive game!

SHS vs. Memorial (1/9)

Rivalry Game!!!! This first game at Don C. Coleman went to SHS 51-33!!!! In keeping with our theme over the past week or so, our team played very well and executed at a high level. We were able to make them play faster than they wanted to by pressing, and when they were able to handle press, our 1-3-1 defense really bothered them. We were able to limit their post players while also contesting all their 3-point shots. This team is very fun to watch and are competing at a high level right now.

We were led in scoring by JD Cheeves with 15 points on spectacular back-door baseline cuts, leading to reverse layups with many of the assists coming from Joaquin Andrews. Vasili Fakaris and Wes Wohfahrt contributed nine points each. Seven Francis scored eight points, with some timely 3-point shooting. Jalen Jefferson contributed four points, and Joaquin Andrews and Elliot Harlan each pitched in two points. Very good victory for the home team.

SHS vs. Jersey Village (1/12)

This game was a huge test for the home team. JV had a player on their team who scored 54 points against Cy Creek in an earlier District game. So defense was a priority if we were going to win this game. Boy did they deliver!!!! You could tell the team was focused from the first tip, and they did not let up at all during the game. This was the best game we have played from start to finish this year. Everyone contributed, whether it was defense, scoring, passing, rebounding: everyone contributed to this victory. The final score was 68-29, and we held their high-scoring guard to only three points.

We had very balanced scoring, which is becoming the norm for this team. Wes Wohfahrt was a steady senior presence, leading us with 15 points. Shia Francis came off the bench and scored 14 points in his usual explosive fashion, with high-rising power layups and powerful drives to the basket. JD Cheeves, Vasili Fakaris, and Seven Francis each scored nine points. Joaquin Andrews contributed five points, Jalen Jefferson scored four, Cameron Coucheu chipped in with two, and Ken Owens made one of his two free throws. Great game!

With that win, we are now 5-0 in District and squarely in the hunt for a playoff berth if we can keep improving. Next week is a big week for us. We play the other two Cy Fair teams, who also are the leaders in our District. We play at Cy Fair Tuesday (1/16) weather permitting and Cy Creek Friday (1/19) at home. We want fans at all our games, but we really want to fill up the gym for the Cy Creek game. Come out and support your Spartans!!!!!!!
