Varsity Swimming Comes in 2nd at Polar Plunge Invite

On Friday and Saturday, January 5th and 6th, 29 Varsity swimmers travelled to the Cy Fair Natatorium to participate in the annual Polar Plunge Invitational against 18 other teams in a prelims/finals meet. Both the men and women finished 2nd overall behind Kingwood, with the women earning 407 points and the men earning 377 points. To see official results, click HERE.

Junior Elle Burkea West Point commit, broke two meet records and snagged two 1st places: 100 freestyle (with a time of 52.40, previous record from 2020 was 54.26) and 100 backstroke (with a time of 59.00, previous record from 2019 was 1:02.13). Way to go, Elle!

Another meet record was broken in finals with the 400 free men’s A relay winning 1st with junior Julian Hemmer (49.65), freshman Jack Robertson (49.91), junior Nathan Moss (48.69), and sophomore James Hackney (who really brought it home, swimming a 47.38 split)! Their combined time was 3:15.63, a decisive improvement over the previous record from 2019, 3:21.74.

Another exciting race was the men’s 200 freestyle, where Stratford took 1st and 2nd, respectively, with junior Julian Hemmer (1:49.72) and sophomore Vince Nguyen (1:50.91).

On the women’s side, sophomore Sophia Giesecke won the 100 butterfly (1:01.38) and freshman Savannah Ceraudo took 3rd (1:01.70).

Individuals finishing 2nd-16th in finals included:

  • Freshman Jack Robertson – 4th in 200 IM (2:03.61), 6th in 100 free (50.87)

Your Stratford Swim Team is deep and often both the A and B relays made finals, helping us score lots of points. Relays finishing 2nd-16th in finals included:

200 Medley Relay:

  • The women’s A team finished 2nd in 1:51.26 with Burke (back, 27.53), Wong (breast, 31.58), Giesecke (fly, 27.40), and Glover (free, 24.75).
  • The women’s B team finished 7th in 2:02.31 with Conner (back, 31.23), O. Ceraudo (breast, 34.86), Oteiza (fly, 29.05), and Hanvey (free, 27.17).
  • The men’s A team finished 4th in 1:43.11 with Robertson (back, 25.96), Hunter (breast, 29.62), Nguyen (fly, 24.76), and Moss (free, 22.77).
  • The men’s B team finished 15th in 1:50.88 with Rebollar (back, 29.23), Conticello (breast, 29.79), senior Ben Bednar (fly, 27.55), and junior Devon Beals (free, 24.31).

 

200 Freestyle Relay:

  • The women’s A team finished 2nd in 1:40.87 with Giesecke (25.95), Minyard (25.64), Glover (25.23), and Burke (24.05).
  • The women’s B team finished 5th in 1:46.91 with Askounis (27.19), S. Ceraudo (25.59), Wong (26.76), and Jackson (27.37).
  • The men’s A team finished 3rd in 1:30.12 with Hemmer (22.83), Hunter (22,69), Nguyen (22.61), and Hackney (21.99).
  • The men’s B team finished 6th in 1:33.31 with Conticello (23.83), Barber (24.20), Storey (23.01), and Pavlin (22.27) [swimmers swam in different order than official meet results].

 

400 Freestyle Relay:

  • The women’s B team finished 5th in 4:01.62 with Conner (1:00.32), Hanvey (1:02.24), junior Hana Riley (1:00.48), and O. Ceraudo (58.58).
  • The men’s B team finished 7th in 3:31.43 with Storey (51.85), Barber (54.21), Rebollar (55.44), and Pavlin (49.93) [swimmers swam in different order than official meet results].

 

Next up: Senior Night, January 10th at the SBISD Nat and then the District 17-6A Meets at the Cy Fair Nat, with JV Swimming on January 19th, Varsity Diving on January 25th, and Varsity Swimming on January 27th. Come out to support these athletes as they try to make Regionals and hopefully State!
