Stratford vs. Fort Bend Marshall:

Over the holiday break, our JV Lady Spartans travelled and played the Fort Bend Marshall Highschool Buffs. It appeared that both teams were sluggish due to returning from the holiday break. The game started out very slowly with both teams missing numerous shots. There were so many bricks that another entire gym could have been built.

The Spartans’ constant defense and pestering eventually allowed us to build a slight lead going into and continuing through the second quarter. Riley O’Connor and Camille Warren began piling in the points. Layla Lloyd and Rylah Barnes kept the Buffs away from the basket with numerous steals.

The offenses for both teams improved in the second half. Riley O’Connor caught fire and began raining down three pointers. Emerson Berg and Jordan Lundy cleaned up the rebounds on both sides. Our JV Lady Spartans came out victorious with a score of 36 to 27.

Some of the stats of interest were the following.

  • Riley O’Connor scored 18 pts, 7 steals, and an assist.
  • Camille Warren had 9 pts and 2 rebounds.
  • Layla Lloyd had 3 pts, 4 rebounds, and 2 steals.
  • Rylah Barnes had 2 pts, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals.

  • Emerson Berg had 3 rebounds.

Stratford vs. Spring Wood Tigers:

Our JV Lady Spartans hosted the Spring Woods Tigers. The opposition didn’t score many points early on in the contest because they couldn’t even get a shot off as Jordan Lundy blocked three shots. The Tigers played a man-to-man scheme on defense but it couldn’t stop the high-low passing from Camille Warren to Rylah Barnes. The passing continued throughout the first half. Just in time for the season of giving, there were several great passing combinations. With so many Lady Spartans getting involved with the passing, the defense was always one step behind. The first sequence began with Emily Covington tossing a pass to Caroline White at the top of the arc. Caroline caught the pass, gave the closing defender a shimmy, and squared up for a long swish. The hard work continued as Sophia French outmuscled two defenders for an offensive rebound. After wrestling the rebound away, she passed out to Emerson Berg. Emerson found a cutting Caroline for another deep shot. But, this time, it was a bank shot that extended the lead. One of the best basketball gifts is a wonderfully executed give and go. This is exactly what happened as Caroline White passed to Sophia French. After passing, Caroline continued her run through the paint and received the pass back. She caused the defense to collapse and extended the sharing is caring by finding Kendall Parker for the easy bucket. Our JV Lady Spartans led at halftime with a score of 23 to 4.

Katherine Cronin had one of her four steals to start the second half, and Rylah Barnes grabbed even more rebounds, one of which initiated a quick transition that started with Rylah to Camille and ultimately found Riley O’Connor for a wide open three-point shot. Later, Emily Covington took a rebound coast to coast after beating a defender off the dribble and faking out two other defenders for the shot. The hard work continued as Kendall Parker fought off two defenders for an offensive rebound. After securing the ball, she slid into the middle, drawing the two defenders towards her. This created the space that allowed her to find the cutting Emily Covington for a layup.

The victory ended 44 to 8.

Stratford vs. Northbrook Raiders:

On Friday evening, our JV Lady Spartans visited the Northbrook Raiders. The JV Lady Spartans' team defense throttled the Raiders offense, preventing any driving and limiting passing. Katherine Cronin led the defense with three steals, and Rylah Barnes grabbed four rebounds. The offensive effort was highlighted with a sideline-to-sideline play beginning with Camille Warren passing to Riley O’Connor at the top of the arc. She turned and swung it to Katherine Cronin, who then dropped a pass to Jordan Lundy. Jordan beat her defender with a quick drop step and scored the bucket. After the first quarter, we led 10 to 0 with nine total team steals.

The second quarter was a defensive battle between the two teams. Caroline White was a firecracker at the top of the arc and did not allow any entry into the key. The defense was highlighted by Sophia French with two steals. She was even able to keep composure when she got hit in the nose with the ball while making a steal. Her effort continued on the offensive side of the court with a swish after boxing out her defender on a backside rebound. Emerson Berg cleaned up the rebounds. And Kendall Parker had an intimidating block. Our lead was 15 to 7 going into halftime.

The third quarter saw Katherine Cronin and Camille Warren continue the defensive effort with three steals each. Katherine started the play with a steal and got the transition pass to Riley O’Connor. Riley’s court vision spotted Rylah Barnes on the backside. Riley lob-passed over the entire defense to Rylah for the easy layup. Emerson Berg had a textbook block and started the transition. The highlight of the quarter was Caroline White seizing the opportunity and driving down the paint. After collapsing the defense, she did a beautiful windmill pass. Luckily for the opposition, the ball rattled around the rim but did not fall.

To the sheer delight of the Stratford fans, the fourth quarter had some great passing. Caroline White handed off a pass to Emily Covington and then screened her defender. Emily continued around the arc, where she passed the ball to Emerson Berg. Emerson completed the give and go to Emily, who cut to the basket for a layup. The victory ended 37 to 11.
