Stratford 42 vs. Cy Creek 8

It was another signature win for The Freshman Lady Spartans Tuesday night at home. This time the unlucky opponent was the Cy Creek Cougars. The defense again overwhelmed the Cougars, and the scoring came from 9 different girls. A highlight of this game was the ball movement and assists that set up wide-open opportunities.

The entire team played impressive defense, holding Cy Creek to zero points for the quarter on the way to only 8 for the entire game. Claire Kadane got going with a three-pointer and a layup. Stella Weiss added a bucket early, and Sophia Prejean hit a basket as well as a free throw. Not to be outdone, Aniyah Cunningham drilled a deep three. Zoe Thompson chipped in a free throw to close things out. Spartans 14 - Cy Creek 0 after one.

The second was more of the same as all the girls rotated in and out, but the trademark defense didn’t waiver. Cy Creek managed one bucket and a throw-it-up-and-hope-for-the-best three-pointer. The Spartans continued to move the ball and scored off defensively created turnovers. Zoe had multiple steals that led to 3 points. Madeline John and Abigail Williams both hit jumpers, and Brooke Sponsel chipped in a free throw. Then Aniyah decided she liked the three-point line and drained another 3, and to borrow a phrase from another fan “Aniyah is on Fyre” with her first half leading 6 points. Stratford led at half 26-5.

The third quarter put the game to bed as the girls scored 13 unanswered points. Shelby Thibodeaux had a great assist and multiple rebounds. Her post mates Sophia and Stella also kept the Cougars off the boards, chipping in a block and another assist each. Allie Moss got in on the scoring by hitting a three-pointer and another bucket off a great pass from Claire. Claire also added a three-pointer of her own. Sophia and Madeline both scored a basket as well as Zoe getting to the line for a free throw. Stratford 39, Cy Creek 5 after three.

The game in hand, the refs let the last quarter get very chippy, as it appeared the officials were ready to move on. The physicality of the Cougars was notably met head-on by Phoebe Heidel and Ginger Koss. Both girls refused to back away and fought for every loose ball and rebound. The scoring was very hard to come by as the game turned into a bit of a rugby match with tie up after tie up leading to multiple jump balls. Brooke did manage to get a put-back for a bucket. Madeline closed things out with a free throw, and the game ended with a final of 42-8 for another Spartan victory.
