KATY ISD BASKETBALL TOURNEY

vs. Fulshear (11/30)

This was a very entertaining and competitive game. SHS started out the game playing well, with crisp execution, solid defense, and good overall team play highlighted with a spectacular dunk by Shia Francis. We just could not consistantly score the basketball, missing shots that we normally make. But, we were able to build a lead at halftime of 6 points.

The second half continued our scoring woes, and Fulshear generated just enough offense at the end of the second half to get a 45-56 victory. JD Cheaves was SHS’s leading scorer with 10 points. Vasili Fikaris contributed nine points, both Joaquin Andrews and Wes Wohlfahrt scored seven points each, Shia Francis contributed five points, and Jalen Jefferson chipped in with four points.

vs. Cypress Woods (12/1)

SHS played two games on Friday. The first game was against Cy Woods and it was a tough one for us. They were very big, physical,  and aggressive and we just did not match their physicality or aggressiveness. They also played with a lot of confidence and made shots early and often. All these early tough games are giving our boys valued experience that we will be able to carry over to our District schedule. JD Cheaves led us in scoring with nine points, Joaquin Andrews contributed eight points, Shia Francis had four points, Seven Francis and Wes Wohlfahrt contributed three each, and Vasili Fakaris and Elliot Harlan chipped in with two points each.

vs. Seven Lakes (12/1)

Continuing our trend of playing some of the best competition in the city, we played against Seven Lakes in their gym. Seven Lakes won 50-73, but the score was not indicative of the fight we put up. They are a top 25 team in the State, but we did battle with them the entire game. We were led in scoring by JD Cheaves with 16 points, followed by Wes Wohfahrt with 11,and Joaquin Andrews contributed nine points. Jalen Jefferson pitched in five, Vasili Fikaris scored four, and Shia Francis and Cameron Cocheu chipped in with two points each.

vs. Klein Oak 37-66 (12/2)

Our last game of the Katy ISD Tournament was against Klein Oak,  and it was not a good game for the Spartans at all. The Spartans lost 37-66 in what was a debacle from the tip. Tough game, but there will be better days for this team.

vs. Klein Collins 73-46 (12/5)

On the heels of arguably our worst game of the year, we bounced back with one of our better games of the year. We went to Klein Collins, and it was clear playing these tough early games has allowed our team to start to mature and figure out how to compete at the 6A high school level. We played excellent defense, were very crisp on offense, and played a complete game. The final score was 73-46, with Wes Wohfahrt leading the way with 22 points, Shia Francis scored 15, and Joaquin Andrews had 10. JD Cheaves contributed eight points, Jalen Jefferson and Seven Francis chipped in with seven each, and Vasili Fakaris and Elliot Harlan contributed two apiece.

PORT ARTHUR MEMORIAL BASKETBALL TOURNEY

Last Friday we travelled to Port Arthur, Texas to participate in the two-day Memorial tournament.

vs. Aldine Eisenhower (12/8)

We carried over our improved play and competed at a high level to secure the victory 69-49. This was another complete game by SHS with high-level team play. Wes Wohfahrt led us again with 21 points, with Jalen Jefferson scoring 13, and JD Cheaves providing 10 points. Joaquin Andrews contributed eight points, Shia and Seven Francis each contributed six points, and Elliot Harlan provided five points.

vs. Port Arthur Memorial (12/8)

Our second game of the day was against the host team. It was a physical and intense game that literally went down to the wire. Points were at a premium in this game as both teams played intense defense with all shots being heavily contested. This was a weight-room game, as pushing, grabbing, tough rebounds, and hustle were keys to the game. It was nip and tuck the entire game and came down to the last 10 seconds.

Wes Wohfahrt made one of two free throws with 15 seconds to go to put us up by two points. They advanced the ball and took a shot that was missed, but we could not secure the rebound. They called a quick timeout with 7 seconds remaining. We fouled them at the 4 second mark because we had two fouls to give. They took the ball out on the side and with our defense applying aggressive pressure, the player dribbled to avoid the pressure and heaved up a three-point shot that went in. Game over. It was a heartbreaking loss, but our boys played their heart out. Wes Wohfahrt led us again with 11 points, and Joaquin Andrews scored 10 points before fouling out. Jalen Jefferson contributed eight points, JD Cheaves contributed five points, Vasili Fakaris scored four, and Shia Francis chipped in with three points.

vs. San Antonio Pieper (12/9)

Another highly contested, well-played game. In the first half, we played extremely well and ended the half on an 8-point run, capped with Luke Covington making a 3-point buzzer beating halftime shot to put us up 6-8. But Pieper was not to be denied and had a real sharpshooting guard, who did not miss any three-point shots in the second half. We kept it close, but just could not score enough at the end of the game to pull it out. Joaquin Andrews led the scoring with 15 points; JD Cheaves scored 10; Shia Francis, Jalen Jefferson, and Wes Wohfahrt each scored five points; and Elliot Harlan and Luke Covington chipped in with three points apiece.

vs. Clear Creek (12/9)

The final game of the Tournament was against Clear Creek. We did not start the game off well at all. But by the second quarter, we started to figure out the best way to defend this team and the most efficient way to score against them. Creek kept the game close, but we went on an eight-point run midway through the fourth quarter, which sealed the victory for the Spartans 45-33. Joaquin Andrews led the scoring with 14 points. Seven Francis contributed nine points. Shia Francis, Wes Wohfahrt, JD Cheaves, and Elliot Harlan all contributed four points each. Jalen Jefferson shipped in with three, and Vasili Fakaris with two.

Varsity's current record is 8-12 with a very challenging schedule with clear improvement being seen from this young team!
