The Stratford Boys Freshman A Basketball Team started strong in the first seven games of the season, with a current winning record of 5-2, including tournament play. Their first two games saw dominant wins over opponents Katy Taylor and Houston Christian on those schools’ home courts.

Their next three games were part of the SBISD Freshman Boys Basketball Tournament, in which they finished as Runner Up after a hard-fought matchup in the Championship game, losing to Cinco Ranch, who proved to be their first strong competitor of the season. They easily beat Katy Taylor again and Spring Woods in the first two rounds of the tourney.

Last week, rounding out a busy week of five games in six days, the boys played Cypress Ranch on Monday at home in a heart-breaking loss, where they went down in the first quarter and struggled to get back in it but almost pulled it out in the end as they clawed back with defense and strong shooting to make it close. Tuesday they pulled out a solid victory over Katy Jordan in our home gym in a competition that was close in the first half and saw Stratford pull away decisively in the second half for the strong win.

Facing stronger competitors is growing this offensive team, who has outscored its opponents by up to 35 points at times. The team is led by top scorers Jackie Hope, Asa Rigo, and Francisco Blanco, but this scoring powerhouse has seen seven of their eleven players score 30+ on the season so far, and all eleven players scored in the team’s first three games. Each team member has been a significant contributor, including Ryan White and Connor Wohlfahrt, who are outstanding at rebounds and put-backs inside the paint, as well as Cannon Thompson, who had the season-high single-game points scored so far with 15. John Briggs, Jackson Lisle, and Jackie Hope have also been dominant on defense, with Asa Rigo a top contributor of assists.

This week the team will face Spring DeKaney on Tuesday and then will compete in the Cy Fair ISD Freshman Boys A Team Tournament Thursday-Saturday, all games away in Cy Fair, at Cy Park and Cy Springs. The future of Stratford Basketball looks bright with these strong freshmen!
