In a tale of two halves, Freshmen Green dropped their second game in a row on Wednesday with a 35-6 loss to Tomball.

Tomball had a nice kick return to midfield to open the game. The Spartan defense appeared to start where they left off last game with some nice stops. Callan Kirk had a nice tackle for loss to set the tone. But Tomball kept driving and reached the end zone on their first drive to take a 7-0 lead.

Stratford’s first drive ended 3 and out, and after a short punt,  Tomball took over at the Stratford 35. Four plays later Tomball found the end zone again to go ahead 14-0.

Stratford offense started strong on their next drive, establishing a good ground game. John Briggs had a 7-yard keeper to start followed by nice hard runs up the middle by Daemon Harris for 13 yards and 6 yards. But the drive stalled on a third down sack, and the Spartans were forced to punt. Reayon Harris took over punting duties in the second quarter and delivered a nice punt to put Tomball back to their own 25. Tomball quickly answered with a 59-yard run to pay dirt a few plays later to extend the lead to 21-0.

Stratford’s next drive once again started with promise and a balanced attack. Harris again found an opening up the middle for 10 yards. The passing game came alive with a 10-yard reception by Ryan White and a Harris swing pass that resulted in 12 yards. A horse-collar tackle penalty on Tomball pushed the Spartans another 15 yards and they appeared to be driving. But an interception at the Tomball 20 ended the drive.

Tomball’s last drive of the first half was keyed by nice pass plays of 33 yards and 25 yards. They once again found the end zone and took a commanding 28-0 lead. Stratford’s ensuing drive bogged down with 2 QB sacks, and the Spartans went to halftime down 28-0.

The Spartans kept up with Tomball in the second half. The Spartans first drive of the half started with promise with a Harris 10-yard run keyed by a nice block from White. A few plays later with Stratford driving, the drive stalled with a false start on 3rd and 2 and the Spartans were forced to punt. The Spartan defense responded and held strong on Tomball’s next drive, keyed by nice open field tackles by Ben Roberts and Jayden MatthewsCallan Kirk had a QB sack for a 15 yard loss. Stratford recovered a muffed snap at the Tomball 23 yard line to be in scoring position as the 3rd quarter ended.

Stratford began the 4th quarter with the ball and a short field. The drive started off strong with a 7-yard run by Briggs, keyed by a good block from Harris. Harris then had runs of 9 yards and 4 yards. A 14-yard screen pass Briggs to Harris capped off the drive with a Spartans touchdown. PAT was missed and the Spartans were on the board 28-6. Unfortunately, Tomball answered quickly with a 70-yard KO return for TD to go up 35-6.

Stratford ended the game with another strong drive. The offensive line continued to open up good holes for Harris, who had runs of 7, 8, and 20 yards. Joey Mundwiller had a nice catch and run for 15 yards to put the Spartans near the Tomball goal line. Unfortunately,  time ran out and the Spartans couldn’t capitalize, and the game ended 35-6.
