Your Spartans came out clicking on both sides of the ball this week at Tully Stadium vs. Hastings.

As is almost always the case, SHS starting on offense. They didn’t disappoint on the very first play by putting it in the hands of the speedy Hunter Biehl for a 20-yard gain on the reverse play. Aaron Deleon continued the initial drive by assisting in the conversion of a 4th down precision pass play to Braxton Wakefield. Unfortunately, the drive was stopped with an interception by HHS in the end zone.

SHS’s defense came out like a new team with a solid team effort forcing a three and out.

SHS’s offense didn’t waste any time and quickly hit a pass from Deleon to wide-open Wakefield for a 30-yard TD along the sidelines.

And again, SHS’s team defense forced a three and out.

SHS’s next offensive drive produced a 25-yard flare pass to Derrik McGee for a TD, making it 14-0. The drive was aided by 1st down plays to Anderson Dinh on a reverse and a screen pass to Jack Stewart.

SHS’s defense continued its stellar play with key plays from Cooper Kemp, Johnny Crawford, and Parker Johnson. The defense ended HHS’s attempted offensive drive with an interception by Nate Grant.

SHS’s next drive was another success, ending with SHS up 22-0 after a two-point conversion. The drive was finalized with a 25-yard run by McGee. This drive was highlighted by the boys up front opening holes and protecting the QB: Leo Herrera, Clayton Nonhof, Ryan Griggs, Armondo Castro, and Zachary Prudhomme.

SHS’s defense gave up their first 1st down of the game on HHS’s next drive. But, Crawford and Christian Bell made them pay with some big hits. One of the defense’s big hits coughed up the ball,  allowing Carson Davidson to recover the fumble for SHS.

SHS had their first struggle on offense, but a 57-yard punt by Bo Harrison pinned HHS on their 1-yard line.

SHS quickly forced another HHS punt by some strong play by Davidson and Crawford. This gave SHS’s offense just enough time to sneak in an impressive 39-yard field goal by Ricky Estrada, ending the first half 25-0 SHS.

SHS defense didn’t skip a beat on the first drive of the second half. Bo Harrison put HHS in a tough spot on the first play with a 6-yard tackle for a loss. Then, Davidson recovered his second fumble of the game to swap possession.

SHS then took possession and put it in the hands of the offensive line. The boys up front led the way, and Joseph Netter took advantage with some strong runs. The drive was capped with an impressive colliding catch by Stewart for a TD, making it 32-0 SHS.

Our defense bent a bit on the next drive but didn’t break. Cooper Harrison slammed the door on HHS’s 4th-down attempt forcing a turnover on downs.

SHS added three more on another field goal by Estrada after Rives and Biehl contributed to the drive on pass and run plays.

A penalty on the SHS kick-off gave HHS good field position and an opportunity for a 37-yard TD pass after ricocheting off multiple players. A failed extra point attempt made the score 34-6 going into the 4th quarter.

SHS managed the clock in the fourth quarter to preserve the victory, but HHS had to work for it with several SHS defensive players coming in to protect the victory. Demetrius Cotton and Eric Ferworn were all over the place in the fourth making it difficult on HHS’s attempted comeback.

SHS comfortably finished with the win, 35-20.

Your Spartans have the next week off and return to the field on 9/21 vs Cy Fair.
