The Freshman Green dropped to 1-1 after a tough loss to Hastings Wednesday night. For the second week in a row, the Spartan offense struggled to put points on the board.

The Spartans came out in the first quarter and asserted themselves defensively. The defense stuffed Hastings on their first possession, holding them to 3 and out. After a Spartan offensive fumble at their own 40, the defense again stepped up and held Hastings to a short drive and forced a punt. Cannon Thompson had another strong day on defense, coming up with 3 tackles in the quarter, two for loss.

Stratford's third drive on offense started out with promise and carried into the 2nd quarter. Daemon Harris managed to scoot with a screen pass 20 yards, getting the Spartans into Hastings territory. But the drive stalled, and the Spartans were forced to punt. Stratford again appeared to be standing strong on Hastings next possession. But, backed up with a 3rd and 20, Hastings ripped off a 30-yard run that shifted the momentum. Hastings scored a touchdown with PAT with 2 minutes left in the half. Stratford got the ball back and appeared to be threatening, but a 25-yard John Briggs pass downfield was broken up at the last second and the teams entered halftime with Hastings up 8-0.

The third quarter began with a nice kick-off return from Jayden Matthews that got the Spartans near mid-field. Two strong runs from Harris had the Spartans moving. But the drive stalled, and ended with a QB sack and the Spartans were forced to punt. After a nice punt from Jackson Fulweber, Hastings was pinned at their own 24. The Spartan defense held strong again, led by Ben Roberts with two tackles on the drive (one for a loss). Hastings only drive of the quarter ended on a QB sack/TFL by Amoree Johnson. Stratford got the ball back late in the quarter with a nice punt return, keyed by a beautiful open field block by Colton Barber. The drive ended with an interception, and the quarter came to a close.

Hastings answered with another score early in the fourth quarter on a drive that was keyed by a 50-yard run to the Spartans' 2 yard line. Hastings punched it in a couple of plays later, but missed the PAT to go up 14-0. Stratford's first drive of the quarter was a struggle, with two QB sacks given up and a QB pressure that resulted in an incompletion. Another nice Fulweber punt flipped the field. Hastings' ensuing drive was short-lived, ending with tackles for a loss by Westy Bennett and Fulweber. The game wound down back and forth with short drives by both teams. Stratford Spartans Matthews, Thompson, and Bennett recorded more nice tackles. Jackson Fulweber pounced on a Hastings fumble with 1:10 left in the game, but Stratford's last chance to get on the board fell short and the game ended 14-0.
