The Spartans entered the final week of District play having clinched a playoff spot but not knowing their final place in the standings. Facing a solid Jersey Village team trying to make the playoffs, there was work to be done to keep the winning momentum going.

Highlights:

Spartans 11 - Falcons 1:

The Backyard was packed for Senior Night and the opportunity to recognize the contributions of our 10 members of the Class of 2023: Luke Barre, Tucker Copeland, Cade Hanlen, Matthew McDuffie, Brecken Menuet, Christian Merchan, Alex Skoutelakis, Harris Timmreck, Paxton Terveen, and John White. The Spartans scored three runs early and then added seven more in the fourth inning to build a lead that would not be relinquished. Thomas Cloud took the ball (3.2IP/4H/1R/1BB/1K) and earned the victory. Cade Hanlen (1.1IP/0H/0R/1K) closed out the game in spectacular fashion. The offense had nine hits on their way to the eleven-run evening. Rian Healy (RBI) and Terveen (2R/3RBI) led the way with two hits each. Caden Baker (2R), Braxton Wakefield (2R/RBI), Henry Braniff (RBI), Menuet (2B/2R/2RBI), and Copeland (1R) all contributed a hit to the total.

Spartans 3 - Falcons 1:

Eliminated from playoff contention with the earlier loss, the Falcons were determined to end their season with a win over the Spartans. A great pitcher’s duel ensued as McDuffie got the start and threw five shutout innings (5IP/2H/0R/3K). Merchan relieved him with a scoreless inning (1IP/1H/0R). After six innings, the game was tied 0-0 when thunderstorms rolled in, causing it to be suspended until 10 am Saturday.

Saturday morning brought cooler temps and the Spartan bats finally warmed up. They greeted the Falcons with a three-run seventh inning. Needing only three outs to win the contest, the Boys in Green went to Carson Craft and then Barre (1IP/0R), who worked out of a bases-loaded jam to earn the save. The bats ground out six hits over the game with Blake Barry, Ethan Gentil (RBI), Adam Gilbert (2RBI), Menuet, Wakefield, and Copeland doing the damage with a hit apiece.

Next Up: The sweep of Jersey Village coupled with Memorial’s sweep of Cy Fair, catapulted the Spartans into a tie with the Bobcats in the final District standings. The District Co-Champions (11-3/22-7 Overall) will learn their playoff opponent and schedule for the first round on Monday.

Please plan on continuing your outstanding support of the team as they embark on their playoff journey!
