Rivalry week against Memorial lived up to expectations. With District standings in the balance, both games were played in front of large, enthusiastic crowds. When the dust settled, each team had emerged victorious on their home field, leaving the Spartans with a one-game advantage in the standings.

Highlights:

Spartans 12 - Mustangs 5:

The Backyard was packed for the opening game of the series, and it proved to be an entertaining one. The Mustangs struck first and jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning. The Spartans answered immediately with a run of their own to close the gap to 4-1. Thomas Cloud (5IP/4ER/4K) then found his groove and turned in a gritty performance, holding MHS scoreless over the next three innings to eventually earn the win. The bats came to life and plated eleven unanswered runs to grab the lead and coast to the 12-5 victory. In addition to Cloud, Christian Merchan (1IP/0R/K) and Braxton Wakefield (1IP/0R/2K) each pitched clean innings to close out the game. The offense unleashed a twelve-hit attack led by Caden Baker with three hits. Brecken Menuet, Paxton Terveen, and Maddox Garnero each added two hits, which included Terveen’s fifth home run of the season. John White, Alex Skoutelakis, and Wakefield each added a hit to wrap up the fireworks for the evening.

Spartans 3 - Mustangs 4:

Determined to avoid the sweep, the Mustangs knew they would have to do it against a confident group of Spartans with Terveen on the mound. A playoff-like atmosphere greeted the teams and by the sixth inning, the Spartans had scratched out a 3-1 lead. Their backs to the wall, the Mustangs took advantage of some opportunities and pushed across three runs to seize the lead. The SHS rally fell short, and Memorial escaped with the 4-3 victory and a split of the series. Terveen (5.2IP/1ER/5K) kept the game close and the Mustangs off-balance throughout much of the evening. Carson Craft (.1IP/0R) closed out the game for the Spartans. The offense was stymied by the Mustang pitching duo and mustered only six hits on the evening. Menuet led the way with a dominant 4-hit performance that included two doubles and two runs scored. Terveen and Skoutelakis picked up the other hits on the evening.

Next Up: With the split, the Spartans remain in second place (9-3 District/20-7 Overall), two games behind Cy Fair and one game ahead of Memorial entering the final week of District play. The Jersey Village Falcons visit The Backyard on Tuesday when the Spartans will celebrate Senior Night. The final game of the District season will take place on Friday at Jersey Village. Please continue your incredible support, and plan on attending the games this week to cheer on the Spartans.
