Last week the Varsity Spartans hosted Northbrook. A talented but untested team, the Raiders were hoping to move up in the District standings while the boys in green were looking to build on their two-game winning streak. The games did not live up to the hype as SHS coasted to consecutive victories. The display of strong hitting, pitching, and fielding moved the Spartans up in the District standings where they are now 4-2 (15-6 overall).

Players gathered with Weston Grover (Wilchester Elementary) before he threw out the first pitch at the Northbrook game on Thursday (3/28).

Highlights:

Spartans 10 – Raiders 3:

If the Raiders were hoping to sneak up on the Spartans, it did not take long to know that our boys had other things in mind. The Spartans jumped out to a 10-0 lead after three innings, and cruised to the 10-3 victory. Paxton Terveen took the ball and threw six strong innings (0ER/5K) to earn the victory. Tucker Copeland came in and retired the top on the Northbrook lineup in order (2K) to close it out and send The Backyard fans home happy. The offense unleashed a twelve-hit attack led by John White, Braxton Wakefield, and Maddox Garnero, each contributing two hits apiece. Caden Baker, Blake Barry, Brecken Menuet, Luke Barre, Luke Rives, and Terveen all joined in, adding a hit each in the momentum-building win.

Spartans 11 - Raiders 1:

A buzz was in the air as the Mean Green traveled across town to Northbrook for the return game. A pumped-up Raider crowd showed up to support the home team. The game started out much closer, with the Raiders scoring a run in the bottom of the fourth to cut the Spartans' lead to 3-1. Needing an answer, the offense exploded for eight runs over the final two innings to close out the 11-1 victory. Thomas Cloud toed the rubber and earned the W keeping the opponents off-balance in his four-inning performance (0ER/5K). Carson Craft added two hitless, shutout innings in relief to seal the victory. The offense was led by Menuet with a three-hit performance that included 4 RBIs and his second homerun of the season. Baker, Terveen, Wakefield, and Rives each added a hit to close out the hitting.

Next up: Varsity plays the Spring Woods Tigers at Spring Woods Tuesday and then at The Backyard on Thursday. Our home game is also SBMSA night at The Backyard – all young players in uniform get in free and have a chance to run the bases and meet the Spartans after the game.
