Sophomore Baseball – March 13

District play began on Monday with a double header at Cy Fair. Zach Christie got the start and pitched a solid 3 innings (1 ER, 4 K’s), and the Spartan bats provided the offense to grab a 7-1 advantage led by Brandon Phillips, Carsten Vasutand Jack McAfee. Stratford had a chance to add on to their lead, but several hard-hit balls by Jax Blundell and Luke Tamez were hit right at the Cy Fair defense. The Bobcats would not go away easily and crept back into the game with some soft infield hits and walks that allowed them to tie the game in the fourth. Luke Tamez entered the game in relief with the bases loaded and only 1 out to preserve the tie.

Final Score - Spartans 7, Cy Fair 7

Brandon Phillips – 3-3, R, 2 RBI

Jack McAfee – 1-1, R, 2 BB

Carsten Vasut – 1-3, R, 2 SB

The nightcap featured a pitcher’s duel and a well-played game all around. Stratford pitchers would combine for 15 strikeouts with Will Tacker leading the way with an impressive 9 K’s in only 3 innings to quiet the Bobcat dugout. Cy Fair would only put 5 balls in play the entire game, but took advantage of some free baserunners in the fourth inning to plate 2 runs. The Stratford bats were once again robbed of several hits in the game as Will Tacker, Jax Blundell, and Zach Christie all lined out to the defense. Jack Sullivan drove in the lone run of the game as the Bobcat pitching and defense was solid as well. The Spartans would run out of time in this one and fall to 3-3-2 on the season. They will look for their first district win next week vs. Cy Creek.
