It was another fantastic week of Stratford Girls JV Soccer! The Stratford JV Team started off the week with a team dinner at Sara Asander’s home on Monday before the big game on Tuesday.

vs. Memorial

Stratford JV girls played Memorial High School at Tully on Tuesday, March 7th. It was a fast-paced game from the start. Memorial came out with a vengeance since the Lady Spartans won their first match-up, and Stratford wanted to continue their winning streak to retain their top place in District. Stratford’s goalkeeper, Olivia Harbison,  made a nice save with 26 minutes on the clock. She did a good job of helping her teammates get into position to defend the goal and combat their opponents throughout the game. A notable play started with a big kick in the back by Claire Lamon to Avery Rushing, and on to Maddie Verrett, who passed to Morgan Long with a nice strike on goal that just missed. Unfortunately, it was the Mustangs who scored first off of a corner kick with just a couple minutes left in the first half.

Stratford went into the second half down 0-1 but determined to score!

There was continuous movement on the field by the rival teams anxious to change the scoreboard. Cate Shofner passed to Cassidy Syamken with a beautiful kick that just missed the top of the goal. The Stratford JV’s strong defense continued to hold MHS to only one goal. With under a minute left in the game, a break-away by Chassity Mandley to Nicole Abbey to Maddie Verrett, with excellent ball control and speed, scored to tie the game in the last seconds. What an amazing ending! Lady Spartans never give up!

Final score SHS 1 - MHS 1.

vs. Jersey Village

To end their last week of soccer just before spring break, the Stratford JV girls traveled to Jersey Village on Friday, March 10th to play their last game of the season. Scores by Nicole Abbey, Avery Rushing, Elizabeth Byrd, and Maddie Verrett allowed for another District shut-out of 5 - 0 against the Jersey Village JV Team. It was an excellent way to end their soccer season as District Champs and start off their spring break!

Many thanks to the parents and supporters throughout the season,  and special thanks to Stratford’s AWESOME JV Coach Rod and Varsity Coach Walters for helping lead the girls to victory!
