Stratford Cross Country traveled to Rosenberg on Thursday afternoon for the Needville High School Invitational. Although it was officially the last day of summer, it felt a lot like July with the temperature hovering around 98-99 degrees at the 4:00 pm start.
With the conditions the way they were and the competition lighter than what our teams typically face, the race plan drawn up by Coach Drayton and Coach Markert called for more of a training session rather than an all-out effort. Every other meet so far this season has started early in the morning, but with the possibility of a later start in hot conditions in the post-season, the Needville race was an opportunity to experience something different that may benefit our teams in the long run. The primary mission was accomplished, and the Spartans dominated the standings and awards to boot.
Varsity Girls (2-mile race, 8 teams, 85 individuals)
The Stratford girls won first place by a wide margin with a low of 19 points, followed by second place Needville with 71 points.
Varsity Boys (3-mile race, 13 teams, 105 individuals)
The Varsity boys also easily captured the team title with 23 points, ahead of second place Needville with 71 points.
JV Girls (2-mile race, 6 teams, 65 individuals)
The JV girls finished second place in the team competition with 40 points, behind first place Needville with 26 points.
JV Boys (3-mile race, 3 teams, 91 individuals)
The JV boys won first place with 18 points, ahead of second place Clute Brazoswood with 41 points.
Our Varsity teams will compete in the Nike South Invitational next Saturday morning, a premier event that attracts many of the top cross-country programs from across Texas and Oklahoma. It will be held at Bear Branch Park in The Woodlands. The Varsity elite boys race will start at 7:15 am, followed by the elite girls at 7:45 am.
Our sub-Varsity teams will compete on Friday at the Klein High Bearkat Tune-up at Spring Creek Park in Tomball. The first race will be at 8:00 am.
